Taking a break from dogma? Yeah me too. ๐Ÿ˜

The vibe is so strong it gracefully subsumes the nagging self-judgments you loop about your voice. Youโ€™re love. In a body. Shining sound for all to feel.

Thatโ€™s what Iโ€™m into these days.

30 years of deep relationship with mantra and the heart of sound has taught me that being connected to the sensation of the sound is what Iโ€™m after - not performance, not anyone elseโ€™s approval, not perpetuating the aspects of tradition that pinches womensโ€™ voices into an airy, heady ultra โ€œfeminineโ€ idealized voice sound that cuts us off off full embodiment and empowerment.

I lived in India, studied with amazing music and mantra chanting teachers, taught and sang on the banks of the Ganges at an ฤล›ram for years, and assimilated into being a โ€œgood Indian girl.โ€

That era is over for me. You couldnโ€™t pay me to go back to the innocent romantic spiritual idealism ignorance I had then, which got me involved in an embarrassing number of weird cultish dynamic situations.

Somehow my bhakti devotion to the source of the sound, and years of palpating the tender edges of loving Love and allowing Love in as sound, got me through to a place where I am now:
Happy. Whole. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Throwback to being โ€œฤล›ram famousโ€ in Rishikesh when I lived, sang, and taught mantra & nฤda yoga in India 2014-2020.

It sure was an amazing time in my life and I am forever grateful to my gurus, my mentors and friendsโ€ฆ and the lineage of unseen yogฤซs and yoginฤซs whose prayers echo throughout the Himฤlayas (and are audible and palpable if you can be quiet enough to listen / feel!)

I obliged thousands of these photo requests, offered as a small kindness to the many folks who were tickled by the sight of me so comfortable in that environment and attire.

Especially after evening prayers, folks would want to click a pic with the firangi who sang mantras on the Ganga! I was honored and humbled every day to be so lucky to serve the community in that way.

I couldnโ€™t walk out of my ฤล›ram room those years without being fully made up: saree or salwar kameez, bejeweled and bindiโ€™d as expected for a โ€œgood Indian girlโ€ (I did not take vows of sannyas so the white or orange robes were not for me)

This was at the blissfully ignorant height of my assimilation into Indian culture: before the me too movement, before Covid, before the first time the orange man took over the White House in the US, before black lives matter, before the cracks in the foundation were made abundantly clear to me in a new way. Before the connections between the American style patriarchy I had been raised in, and the Indian one that had adopted me, were undeniable.

Oh it was a happy time! My mid 30โ€™s!

Now with the wisdom of another decade of deep contemplation and digestion passed by, I feel much more balanced, nuanced, comfortable in the both/and.
