Signing up for a 50k last year was a great idea! NOPE! I waved the white flag at the halfway point—16.2 miles in, 3h50min. Here’s what went great for my first unofficial 25k:

👍 Napoleon Dynamite nutrition plan: I had gummy bears every 20 minutes instead of tots in my pockets.
👍 No poison ivy!
👍 I made the right call and stopped at the halfway point. Guarantee: I was the first 50k participant to drop out today.
👍 Finished 16.2 miles with the least amount of water possible. 🙄

So, what went wrong with my 50k?

👎 I didn’t wear a hydration pack. Total water intake during the race? 16 fluid ounces. 🙄
👎 I’m a BIG BOI at 235 pounds—time to improve my dietary habits if I’m serious about running.
👎 Turns out, I can’t finish a 32-mile trail run with just an eight or 9-mile training session. Rookie move.
👎 Respiratory issues sidelined me for 19 days—19 days of training lost to lingering health problems.

One of the recurring themes athletes always ask is, “Can you go?” If you can’t go, get out before you hurt yourself or a teammate. I was smiling when I told the race officials I was done. I wanted out of the hurt locker!

I’ve done some wild stuff this year with long-distance running. But this was my first time in a distance trail race, so I played it smart—just this time.

Now, I get why trail racing is fun. I’m hooked, and I’ll be back in 2025. I haven’t decided which distance yet 🤣. I’m happy to end this year with an easy 5-mile Turkey Trot.

Finding a community where you can just be yourself can be tough, especially if you’re struggling with depression. The reality is harsh—one person dies every 11 minutes from su***de in the U.S., making it one of the leading causes of death.
For the past two years, I’ve been lucky enough to be part of the Mini-Donut Half Marathon pacer team, specifically Team 2:30. It’s been one of those things that not only pushes me to be better but also lets me stay true to who I am while helping others do the same.
Remember, you don’t have to be amazing at something to be part of a group. You just need to show up and be yourself. Even if you’re dealing with mental health stuff, you don’t need to suffer in silence. There are plenty of resources that allow you to talk about even the smallest things that are bothering you. Seeking support is not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength and understanding.
Even when you’re struggling, finding a group that supports you can bring a sense of relief. Being part of a team where you’re valued just as much as anyone else is a powerful experience. Speaking up about your mental health can be tough, but it’s the first step toward real strength—and a better way forward. It’s empowering to take that first step, and it can lead to a better future.

I was gifted and awarded the following “opportunities” before running today’s half-marathon:

🙄GI issues for the last two days
💧100% humidity
👟Running in new shoes and socks (both cardinal sins in the running world)
🤡Bloodied shoe and sock

Let’s face the truth: the ‘perfect opportunity’ is a myth. Instead of waiting for ideal conditions, go out and make it happen. Losers wait for the perfect opportunity; winners create one.

It’s a universal truth that we all face similar challenges and often give the same ‘reasons’ not to take action. It’s not just you, it’s all of us:

⏰Not enough time
😅Too tired
😫It’s difficult

It’s supposed to be difficult if you want to grow—in school, career, family, and relationships. That’s why it’s called work.

If you want to achieve something, you need to put in the work. One of the best quotes I’ve heard in the last five years is:

🏛️“We don’t rise to the level of our expectations; we fall to the level of our training.”🏛️

If your goal is just to show up and finish, that’s the type of performance you’ll get when it matters most.
🏁 2:30:40

In a leadership development seminar I attended last month, I shared that I’m super lucky to have developed my physical fitness to the point where I can show up and do the minimum. Not too many have that opportunity or physical capability.

Sometimes, we can fly on autopilot and do the bare minimum.

🍀I’m one lucky dude.

I had two things I wanted to accomplish before my next marathon.

👉Lose 11 pounds
👉Run 8 miles three times a week

🫤The weight loss was meh
🤷🏽‍♂️Running three times a week was a nice thought

Regardless of my shape, I finished this one at 5:55:40. The feeling of crossing the finish line, the sense of accomplishment and relief, was indescribable.

Running alongside the majestic Lake Michigan is a sight to behold, especially as you approach the beach. It’s a visual treat that adds to the allure of the marathon.

Here is what was brutal on this marathon
😡 The 3-mile trail run at the turnaround point
😡 The humidity climbed to 70%, with temps settling at 78 degrees after 10 am

Overcoming cramping and hydration issues in the final 6 miles was a testament to the resilience and determination required in marathon running. Regardless of how many (or little) hours you train, it’s pain management and tolerance after 13.1 miles.

Here’s what went right in this race
😊I finished my 2nd marathon in a month (4th overall)
😊Completed this race before the cut-off time
😳Didn’t finish last
😳Regardless of my fitness level, I can finish anything below 26.2 miles

90% of the race was along Michigan, which is flat. After the trail jog, you are treated to a lovely 3-mile beach run. It was amazing.

If you’re a marathoner (or looking for a challenge) with a scenic view, they don’t get much better than the Manitowoc Maritime Marathon.

I just completed my 3rd full marathon, and it’s been quite a journey these last couple of weeks. I encountered a few hurdles, making this marathon a unique experience.

👉 Despite carrying an extra 50 pounds, I weighed 249 pounds but was determined to complete the 26.2 miles. It’s a challenge no one wants to face, but I was ready to push my limits. This experience has taught me the value of self-belief and the power of determination.

👉 I started my training marathon training two weeks ago.

Full disclosure: I did start in February when the Midwest was getting into the 70s. However, in typical Midwest fashion, winter came back for six weeks.

I used that as an excuse to work on business projects. It was a wrong physical goal but a significant financial goal. My training runs over the last two weeks have looked like this.

▶️ 6 miles, 12.5 miles, 8 miles, 2 miles. 😕

I work full-time at Wisconsin’s favorite grocery store and walk between 6 and 8 miles daily. Balancing work and training has been a challenge, but I’ve managed to carve out time for my runs early in the morning and on my days off. Now, I’m just rationalizing.

I finished in 5 hours 51 minutes. It was not my best performance, but it was a launch point for long-distance running this year. Then again, who runs a marathon with two weeks of training?🤔

Looking ahead, I have my next marathon in just four weeks. My training program is simple: I aim to run/jog 8 miles at least three days a week. I’m also excited to share that I’m determined to shed 20 pounds in the next four weeks, setting high standards for myself. I can’t wait to see what I can achieve!

I have the opportunity to run another marathon, I have to find a way to put my feet back together. 😁

🤔 Where have I been with my weekly protein reviews?

I work full time as an assistant to a manager, at a mid-tier grocery store. It’s a fun time. However, I just got done with a brutal stretch of almost 2 weeks in a row. 😵

🏋️‍♀️I’ve still been training my clients daily, sending out weekly workouts too.🏋️‍♀️

I have to pick and choose my battles when I can. To keep my sanity and not going too far into burnout mode, I stopped with the protein reviews.

They’ll be coming back…

Because, the protein keeps getting delivered. You know what they say about opportunity knocking?

🚨IT’S TOO LATE BECAUSE YOU DON’T HAVE A SYSTEM IN PLACE TO BE SUCCESSFUL!🚨

Managing a website with 10,000 monthly visitors, SEO research/education, training clients, trying to start a YouTube is intense learning and action. Plus trying to fit in personal mental health and training time.

The protein reviews will be coming back weekly. Just not now.

HOWEVER, if you have a suggestion for a protein review, comment below, let me know!

Remember, being consistent is taking one step forward.
