September 3 — Accessibility Is More Than a Ramp

♿ Accessibility Is More Than a Ramp

When we hear the word accessibility, it’s easy to think about wheelchair ramps, accessible parking spaces, and elevators.

But accessibility goes much further.

It’s being able to understand information. Communicate your needs. Access services. Participate in activities. Navigate your community. Make choices. And be included.

For a person with an intellectual, developmental, physical, sensory, or communication disability, something as simple as the way information is presented can either create independence—or create another barrier.

At CADENCE of Acadiana, we believe stronger communities are created when accessibility is considered from the beginning, not added as an afterthought.

💚 Accessibility means creating a way for everyone to participate.

THIS WEEK’S THEME: UNDERSTAND ME.

💚 September is Deaf Awareness Month

Communication is more than words. It is connection, understanding, independence, and the ability to fully participate in everyday life.

Throughout September, CADENCE of Acadiana recognizes people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and the importance of creating accessible, inclusive communities where everyone has the opportunity to communicate in the way that works best for them.

Accessibility can mean sign language, interpreters, assistive technology, visual communication, captions, written information, or simply taking the time to understand how another person communicates.

True inclusion isn’t expecting everyone to communicate the same way. It’s making sure everyone has a way to connect.

💚 Different ways to communicate. Equal right to connect.

THIS WEEK’S THEME: UNDERSTAND ME.

As Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Month comes to a close, we recognize individuals and families affected by spinal muscular atrophy.

SMA is a genetic neuromuscular condition that can cause muscle weakness and affect mobility and other daily activities. However, a diagnosis does not define a person’s personality, goals, relationships, abilities, or value.

Awareness becomes meaningful when it leads to greater understanding, accessibility, representation, and inclusion.

Let’s continue building communities where every individual is respected, supported, and given opportunities to participate fully.

What is one action our community can take to become more accessible?

Living independently does not always mean doing everything alone.

Independence can mean having the right support to make personal choices, manage daily responsibilities, maintain relationships, access community resources, and pursue meaningful goals.

Behind that independence may be a family member, support coordinator, healthcare professional, educator, advocate, volunteer, or community partner.

When the right people work together, individuals with disabilities and older adults can experience more opportunities, stronger connections, and greater control over their lives.

Who has helped you become more independent?
