June is National Elder Abuse Awareness Month. Cases of elder abuse is a widespread and growing issue in the U.S. About 10% of older adults in the U.S. experience abuse or neglect, and the risk is growing as the population ages. It is a shame that our society has come to this. There are five categories of elder abuse: Emotional or psychological, Physical, Sexual, Neglect or self-neglect, and Financial abuse or financial exploitation. This is a growing problem within our communities, and our nation as our population ages. It is an issue that is not just in the United States. Some sources say that 1 out of 4 older people are abused in some form worldwide.
I will go back to the old adage: See Something Say Something.

Hello.
I hope you are enjoying the sunshine and warm weather. It looks like a beautiful day outside. I just love the blue skies and the white fluffy clouds. It reminds me of being a kid, laying in the grass and imagining shapes in the clouds- that looks like a poodle, a ghost, etc. Humm, back when life was simple...

Here is the June Calendar and Menu. Just a reminder, we are still offering the free beginning sewing and crocheting classes. We offer a variety of exercises to help keep everyone healthy and of course, we have everyone's favorite BINGO!

We had two wonderful speakers come to visit the Center from the American Red Cross to discuss Emergency Management. I realize these may be difficult to read, but you can save them as a photo and then enlarge them on your phone.

Tornados, Floods, High Winds, Lightening, and Heavy Rains. Sound Familiar? It seems like this describes last week, doesn't it? Be careful, remember the saying "DON'T DROWN, TURN AROUND".

Oh, my goodness! What fun. It was wonderful to get to spend some time with all of these ladies at the Center's craft class. There was wrapping and gluing, and even messing up, but it sure was fun.
There were even a few folks that we had not seen in a while! We are contemplating our June project now, so stay tuned!

May is national Older Americans Month. You know, I never really thought about it, but I am now an older American. In my mind, I feel like I am still in my 20's, but all the aches and pains quickly remind me I am not.

It makes me think about those who have gone on, my grandparents, too many aunts, uncles and cousins. I miss them all, especially my sweet momma and my loving daddy. I am an older person, but I am an orphan. I do not like this stage of my life. I still want to call momma whenever something happens- she always made me feel better. I miss being able to talk with my daddy. I think he was the smartest man I ever met. No matter what I did- good or bad- they were there with me, and for me. True unconditional love.

That being said, the older folks in our community are not just old people, they are a valuable resource. They have experienced things that you may never have even thought of. They are history, they are skills, they are advice, and they are a valuable part of our community!

If you are lucky enough to still have grandparents, older aunts and uncles, and more importantly, your parents, call them. Tell them how much they mean to you now, while you can. I wish I could tell my momma and daddy again just how lucky I was that they were my parents.

Hello! We had Clara and Mary from the American Red Cross here on Wednesday for a disaster preparedness class, and boy, did I learn a few things!

Did you know that those smoke detectors in your house are only good for 10 years FROM THE DATE THEY ARE MADE? Not the day you buy them, or install them, but the date that the factory made them! I had no idea! I thought that they worked as long as the battery was good. When you install a new battery and push the test button, it just means that the battery is good. After 10 years, it will no longer detect smoke. Guess who is going to be checking their smoke detectors.

I will be posting some information that was passed out in the class at a later date.
