As warmer weather approaches, a familiar cultural script tends to get louder: “Get your summer body ready.” It shows up in ads, social media, and casual conversations just to name a few. The message is persistent…your body is only acceptable in summer if it looks a certain way.
Let’s be clear: that message is not rooted in health. It’s rooted in appearance-based standards, profit-driven diet culture, and long-standing social biases about which bodies are “acceptable” to be seen. From a weight-neutral, Health at Every Size® (HAES)-aligned perspective, the idea of a “summer body” isn’t something you earn, build, or achieve. It’s something you already have. If you have a body, and it exists during summer, you have a summer body. That might sound straightforward, but in a culture that constantly pushes you to shrink and “fix” yourself before participating in life, it’s actually quite a radical shift.
In this post, we’re diving into why body dysmorphia and body image struggles tend to come up in the summer and what you can do about it.
Shift your summer body mindset with guidance from a dietitian—no dieting, no shame, just supportive strategies for feeling good in your skin.
