Alzheimer’s research continues to move toward earlier detection, and a new FDA-approved blood test could make that process more accessible for patients. Dr. Linda Pao, Medical Director and Principal Investigator at Headlands Research JEM, recently spoke with WPBF News about the potential impact of the new test, including its convenience and its ability to help primary care physicians identify patients who may benefit from additional evaluation.

Dr. Pao explains that amyloid changes associated with Alzheimer’s can begin years before symptoms appear. Earlier detection could play an important role as new approaches to prevention and treatment continue to emerge.

Bart Williams, MD, is a Principal Investigator at Headlands Research TMA-Wilmington, and a board-certified family physician with more than 20 years of experience in clinical research and patient care.

Throughout his career, Dr. Williams has led numerous Phase II and Phase III vaccine trials, including studies evaluating vaccines for COVID-19, RSV, and influenza. His research has contributed to the development of innovative vaccines that help protect communities and improve public health.

In addition to his research leadership, Dr. Williams has built lasting relationships with patients through his long-standing practice at Wrightsville Family Practice in Wilmington, North Carolina. A new phase II study found that an investigational quadrivalent measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (MMRV) vaccine generated immune responses comparable to the licensed MMRV vaccine in children ages 4–6, with a similar safety profile. These findings support continued clinical development and the potential to expand vaccine availability for children worldwide.

Dr. Vanessa Sepulveda serves as a Principal Investigator at CMRC Headlands Research. Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, she combines decades of clinical care with academic leadership and extensive research experience in Alzheimer's disease and related cognitive disorders.

As a recognized leader in the field, Dr. Sepulveda has served on the Alzheimer's Association Scientific Program Committee and has presented her research at leading scientific meetings, including the Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC). In 2015, the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society recognized "Un Café por el Alzheimer", the community education initiative she founded to raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease in Puerto Rico. Since then, the initiative has continued, year after year, to educate and accompany patients, caregivers, and the Puerto Rican community through accessible, evidence-based information and outreach efforts.

Her research has focused on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in Hispanic and Latino populations, including studies on the gut microbiome's role in cognitive decline and the development of tools to support family caregivers. As a Principal Investigator at Headlands Research Puerto Rico, she is committed to expanding access to clinical trials that bring promising therapies to patients while advancing the science of Alzheimer's disease. Throughout her career, Dr. Sepulveda has remained committed to the belief that advancing Alzheimer's care requires both scientific discovery and continuous community education. Headlands Research is expanding its presence in the Pacific Northwest with the opening of Headlands Research Western Washington, a new purpose-built clinical research site in Bellingham, WA!

Led by Matthew Bogoyas, DO, a board-certified psychiatrist and 2025 Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the site gives sponsors access to a large, underserved CNS research market with more than 615,000 people within a 50-mile radius. The new site strengthens our ability to support neuropsychiatric research while bringing clinical trial opportunities closer to participants in Western Washington.

Multidose vial presentations (MDV) are a well-established tool for vaccine access. They reduce per-dose cost, simplify logistics, and fit within the infrastructure of lower-resource settings.

Jon Finley, MD, Principal Investigator at Headlands Clinical Research Atlanta (CRA), is among the co-authors on a new phase 3 study published in eClinicalMedicine confirming that the RSVpreF vaccine fits that model. The MDV presentation matched the licensed single-dose vial on immunogenicity, with a comparable safety and tolerability profile. Research like this could help make RSV vaccination more accessible worldwide.
