Where does responsibility for supply stewardship actually change hands?

Materials Management teams spend countless hours receiving product, rotating stock, checking expiration dates, maintaining PAR levels, and ensuring supplies are available when and where they're needed. But once those supplies reach a clinical area, ownership becomes less clear.

Is expiration monitoring still a supply chain responsibility? A nursing responsibility? A shared responsibility?

The reality is that patient safety depends on collaboration. Preventing expired products from reaching the point of care isn't the work of one department alone. It requires visibility, communication, and clearly defined processes across both operational and clinical teams.
