Candid or Editorial Portraits: Which Style Feels Most Like You?

Many women come to me with a single word in mind: headshot. Maybe they need to update their LinkedIn, or a new website is in the works, or they're stepping into something new and want to show up looking the part. They know they need photos. What they often haven't considered is what kind of photos will actually do justice to who they are right now. That's where the conversation gets interesting - and honestly, a lot more fun.

The choice between candid and editorial portraits isn't just a stylistic preference. It says something about how you want to be seen, what you want people to feel when they land on your page, and how much of your full self you're ready to bring into the frame. Let me walk you through how I actually think about this with my clients, because "it depends" is the least useful answer I could give you.

One shoot, so many different looks. 🤎

This is one of my favorite things about a well-planned brand session. We chose a beautiful loft, worked with both natural light and strobes, and carefully pulled together a fall wardrobe that gave us lots of variety.

From polished and corporate to relaxed and casual, each look brings out a different side of her personality — and gives her a whole collection of images to use across her website, social media, and marketing.

A little planning goes a long way. And that's where the creative direction comes in. ✨

Here's something I don't talk about enough: the 20 minutes before the camera comes out matter just as much as the shoot itself. ✨

When you walk into your session feeling calm, prepared, excited (and yes, maybe a little nervous), it shows. You're not scrambling or wondering if you chose the right outfit. You're already in it. 💗

That's why our hair and makeup artist is such a gift. She gets you ready in a natural, your-best-day kind of way. She cheers you on. She's grounded, which helps you get grounded too. By the time we start shooting, you're already halfway to calm and centered. 🪞

But here's the thing: even if hair and makeup isn't part of your session, being prepared still changes everything.

It's knowing your outfits are pressed and ready. 👗
It's having a plan for the story you want your photos to tell. 📝
It's giving yourself a moment to breathe before you step in front of the lens. 🌿

A little nervous? Totally normal. It usually means it matters to you.

What if a workout didn't have to wait until the kids were out of the house? 🍎

When I photographed Alyssa, a health coach who has since become my coach (lucky me 💪), we kept coming back to one question: how do we show working moms that movement can fit into real life?

Not the perfect, polished, do-it-all version.
The real one. 🧺

Alyssa helps people of all ages get strong, eat in a way that works for them, and find their own path to fitness through unconventional teaching. And she does it with so much heart.

So we brought her sweet baby into the story. Because that's the real picture of her life, and the lives of so many women she works with and supports. 💗

This isn't a "you can do it all" message.

It's a gentle nudge: you can do so much more than you imagined, with the right kind of support. ✨

That's what I love about brand photography. It lets people see themselves in your story before they ever say hello.

From our very first cup of coffee, I knew I wanted to be friends with Judy Domenici. ☕

Team photos, and the individual to go with them. ✨

Recently spent the day at Haus of Marin, an aesthetic medical facility, photographing their all woman team — group shots on the steps, plus individual portraits for everyone.

One of my favorite parts of team photography: it's never just one shot. Everyone gets an individual portrait that's actually theirs — for LinkedIn, a bio page, wherever they need to show up as themselves, not just a face in a lineup.

Before the camera 📸 even comes out — picking the right pieces together, slipping into comfy shoes 👟 for the in-between moments, and final touches from our makeup artist.

👉 This is what I mean when I say I want you to feel supported walking into your session. It matters how you feel before we start — present, relaxed, prepared — not just how you look once we do.

We help you choose your wardrobe, bring a hair & makeup artist on set, and show up with a draft shot list and mood board so nothing's left to figure out on the fly. You just have to show up and follow my lead.
