5 Myths about Yoga After 55 that are probably keeping you stuck in your practice.
“You need to be flexible to do yoga.” Actually, flexibility is a byproduct of practicing yoga not a prerequisite. You build it by showing up consistently to your practice.
“Gentle yoga is really the only safe option after 55.” While gentle yoga is a lovely option to include for recovery, our bodies need challenge, load & intelligent resistance to build bone density and the strength we need for sustained longevity!
“If it hurts you have to stop doing everything.” Pain and productive sensation are not the same thing. Knowing the difference is the most important skin in yoga asana practice. Only you can truly know the difference in your own body. You have to practice regularly to learn.
“Your best yoga years are behind you.” WRONG! Women in their 50s, 60s and above who train intelligently report stronger, more connected practices than they had at 30. Experience really is an advantage.
“Modifications mean you can’t do the full pose.” Not true. For lack of a better prop out on the hiking trail in Moab, Utah, I did this pose with my hand on a lump of grass and on a slight incline in place of a block. Props and modifications are biomechanics tools. To advance our practice, the most advanced Yogis use props.
