In the NICU, we know that Neonatal Physical Therapy is so much more than "range of motion exercises.” It's a whole-body, whole-environment, whole-family approach.

A randomized clinical trial examined a Structured Neonatal Physical Therapy Program (SNP) for moderate-to-late preterm infants.

The program combined:
• Therapist-led intervention in the NICU
• Parent education and participation
• A parent-administered home program through the first 6 months

Infants receiving this type of structured care had significantly higher motor scores than the usual-care group at hospital discharge, 3 months, and 6 months.

AND, at 3 and 6 months, the infants also had significantly higher cognitive and language scores.

So, yes, we'd say physical therapy (and all neurodevelopmentally appropriate care) absolutely supports neurodevelopment in the preterm infant!

We start this Physical Therapy Month with a reminder: In the NICU, we know therapy looks different:

It includes expert positioning advice.
It includes thoughtful handling.
It includes supporting regulation.
It includes modifying the environment.
It includes helping parents participate.
And, it includes therapeutic touch and massage.

The smallest interactions can have meaningful clinical purpose and this month, we celebrate the neonatal PTs who bring movement, science, clinical reasoning, compassion, and skilled touch to the tiniest patients. 💜

For neonatal therapists, learning how to provide touch, and when to provide it, is an important part of developing a thoughtful, individualized approach to NICU care.

Today is NICU Awareness Day. 💜

As we close out NICU Awareness Month, we are reflecting on how far neonatal care has come in the last 50 years and how much more there is still to do.

We know that the NICU experience can influence much more than survival.

The developing brain is shaped by relationships, sensory experiences, sleep, stress, pain, caregiving, and the environment.

That is why developmental care, family-integrated care, Kangaroo Care, cue-based care, individualized care, and neonatal therapy matter.

Every interaction is an opportunity to protect the developing brain.

Every parent is an essential member of the care team.

Every small change can contribute to a better long-term outcome.

Oral feeding is one of the most complex activities a NICU infant has to accomplish.

Successful feeding requires coordination across multiple body systems—and for preterm and medically fragile infants, there is a lot at stake.

A systematic review of 14 studies identified three major categories of neonatal therapy interventions:

💜 Oral motor stimulation
💜 Swallowing exercises
💜 Sensory-based interventions

The research suggests that combining complementary approaches may enhance oral feeding readiness, progression, and efficiency.

So, here's the question:

It’s International Neonatal Therapy Week, and we’re celebrating YOU! 💜

What better way to celebrate neonatal therapists than with a reminder of just how fascinating this work can be?

One of our NTMC Instructors, Erin Springer, got the opportunity to participate in a feeding assessment of a baby gorilla at the Seattle Zoo and discovered something pretty incredible: baby gorillas and human babies share surprisingly similar feeding mechanisms! 🐒👶

It’s a fascinating look at how our understanding of feeding, development, and movement can extend far beyond the NICU.

Our NTMC Family includes neonatal therapists, OTs, PTs, and SLPs, from across the United States and around the world. From the USA to Canada, Dubai, Dublin, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Germany, Puerto Rico, and beyond, neonatal therapists are bringing their expertise and curiosity to the care of babies and families.
