Parents provide comfort in more ways than we often realize.

A recent randomized controlled trial found that premature infants exposed to maternal scent experienced lower stress scores and shorter crying durations compared to infants who did not receive maternal scent exposure.

Even when parents cannot be physically present, familiar scent can help create a sense of connection, comfort, and regulation.

Survey your nurses, providers, respiratory therapists, therapists, and families to identify:
✔ Perceived barriers
✔ Safety concerns
✔ Staffing challenges
✔ Knowledge gaps
✔ Cultural factors

The answers can help guide education, policy development, and quality improvement efforts that are meaningful and sustainable.

A familiar scent from Mom or Dad can provide reassurance, support regulation, and help babies feel connected even when families can't be present.

Simple interventions like scent cloths, parent-worn blankets, or familiar clothing items can become powerful tools for developmental care - providing baby with the calming sense that Mom & Dad are always nearby.

Did you know that therapeutic hypothermia, high-frequency ventilation, and chest tubes are among the most commonly reported interventions that limit parental holding?

Yet across the country, some NICUs have successfully developed processes that allow families to safely hold infants receiving these therapies.

The question may not always be "Can this baby be held?" but rather "What needs to happen to make holding possible?"
