"Needing care and being capable of directing that care are two very different things." That's at the heart of Maria Matzik's new article.

Maria is a disability rights advocate from Fairborn, Ohio, who relies on daily assistance to live independently. She's spent more than three decades in advocacy, including over ten years focused on self-directed care.

Writing for New Mobility, Maria makes the case that needing help and needing control over your own decisions are not the same thing. She describes what it's actually like to navigate both a traditional home care program and a self-directed caregiver arrangement, and why having the flexibility to handle everyday changes on her own terms makes all the difference.

Her story is a powerful reminder of what independence really looks like. Read it here: https://hubs.ly/Q04wD6Mn0

MyWhy Wednesday: Meet the PPL Behind the Mission ✨

Breanna C., a member of our PPL team, shares the story behind her “why.” 💜

Breanna's experience raising a son on the autism spectrum has taught her patience, advocacy, and compassion, lessons she brings into her work at PPL every day. Navigating services for him reminds her that behind every case is a real person and a family doing their best.

New on the PPL blog: what emotional support really looks like in in-home care.

Bathing, meals, and mobility are essential parts of care. Having someone you know and trust to provide that care matters just as much. That kind of consistency helps in ways that go beyond comfort. It can lower feelings of loneliness, ease anxiety, and support better health overall, especially for people managing a chronic condition, a disability, or the effects of aging.

A few things worth knowing:

🤝 A familiar caregiver can ease loneliness and worry
🕰️ Routines help people feel calm and secure
💛 Care that respects a person's choices and habits matters
🌱 Small, simple steps can support emotional health, not just physical health
