Here’s what I’ve learned in over a decade of working with breastfeeding families: tongue tie is rarely as straightforward as people make it sound.

A diagnosis isn’t made by just looking at the tongue’s shape. A treatment plan isn’t made from just fixing one symptom. And a release isn’t automatically the right answer just because a restriction exists.

The question isn’t simply, “is there a tongue tie?” The better questions are:
✅ How is feeding going?
✅ How is the tongue functioning?
✅ Is milk transfer affected?
✅ What are the parents’ goals?
✅ What has already been tried?
✅ What other symptoms is baby experiencing?

Those answers are what guide good clinical decision-making.

Sometimes I recommend a release. Sometimes I recommend conservative management. Sometimes I recommend more information before making any decision at all.

The goal is not to identify tongue ties. The goal is to help babies feed comfortably and efficiently while helping parents reach their feeding goals.

If you’ve been given conflicting advice, you’re not crazy. Tongue tie is nuanced and you deserve someone willing to look at the entire picture instead of offering a one-size-fits-all answer.

I’m now offering a 1.5-hour tongue tie education class designed specifically for midwife and doula groups. We’ll cover what tethered oral tissues are, how to spot red flags in your clients and their babies, and when and how to refer.

This class is NOT diagnostic training. It’s about giving you the tools to recognize when something might be going on and knowing what to do next.

The things I hear during home visits never get old 🥹

Uncomfortable pumping, poor latch, difficulty sucking… so much of what my clients are dealing with is completely fixable. They just needed someone with the time and the training to take a closer look.
