Due to the excessive heat, the Homeless Services Center, 19520 Meadowview Court in Leesburg, will extend its drop-in hours by two hours in the evening for the next few days. Today, through Sunday, June 23, 2024, the center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The center will also provide cold water to those seeking relief from the extreme weather. Hello!! Here are some ways Dr. Anne and Dr. Dave celebrate Earth Day every day (and try to reduce their carbon footprint at home and at the office):
-join a buy-nothing group in your neighborhood (we love Freecycle.org) -replace plastic bags with cloth storage snack bags and sandwich bags.
-replace dryer sheets with dryer balls Friendsheep Wool
-replace plastic produce bags and grocery shopping bags with cloth bags Simple Ecology
-look for the Water Sense label when purchasing items like sink faucets, toilets, etc. and Energy Star when purchasing appliances.
-power down electronics when not in use
-replace plastic wrap with Bee's Wrap
-drive slower
-turn off lights, use lamps instead of overhead lights
-compost vegetable waste (as well as egg shells, shredded paper, animal fur, and human hair after home-haircuts)
-turn water off while brushing teeth
-recycle (or, even better, reduce and reuse!)
-plant a tree/wildflowers
-keep thermostat lower in the winter, higher in the summer (even a couple of degrees makes a difference)
-replace something toxic in your home (i.e. parabens, nonstick cookware, plastic Tupperware, triclosan) with an earth-friendly option (glass storage, stainless steel/cast iron pots, Environmental Working Group approved personal care products
