Feeding therapy is NOT just about food exposure. 🍽️
We hear this misconception all the time and we need to set the record straight, because families deserve to know what a truly comprehensive feeding evaluation looks at. 💙
Swipe through to learn about the 4 components to feeding therapy and why every single one plays a role in your child’s relationship with food. 👇🏽
Here is what I want every parent to know about each component :
👄 Oral Motor — If your child is stuffing food, spitting it out, or avoiding certain textures it may not be behavior. It may be that their mouth is working harder than it should. Watch how your child chews and moves food around, it tells us a lot.
🖐🏽 Sensory — If your child gags at the sight or smell of certain foods, only eats specific brands, or melts down when foods touch, their sensory system is overwhelmed. This is real and valid and something we can work on together.
🧠 Food Relationships — If mealtimes feel like a battle every single night, your child may have developed anxiety and negative associations around food. Pressure, bribing, and forcing bites can deepen this over time. Creating a calm, no pressure mealtime environment is one of the most powerful things you can do at home.
🦠 Gut Health — If your child is constipated, gassy, has reflux, or seems uncomfortable, their gut may be driving their food refusal. This is often the most overlooked part and it can change everything when addressed.
When we only treat one part, we get incomplete results. Every child deserves a whole picture approach. 💙
If your child is struggling at mealtime and you feel like you have tried everything, this might be exactly why. 🤍
