When I was growing up, my Dad used to say:
"Baby, it's not what they call you. It's what you answer to that counts." 💙
Damn, that's some powerful advice.
********
Most people don't know this, but my Dad was an attorney, politician, and activist — and for 40 years he fought for the legalization of industrial h**p and medical ma*****na in Kentucky and beyond.
I know this will come as a shock to most of you — but this wasn't a super popular political stance to take in the 70's and 80's in Kentucky. 😳
Because of this campaign platform he often was incredibly unpopular, even ostracized.
He and his ideas were ignored, laughed at, and criticized (and even though today they’re becoming mainstream, he still hasn’t been given the credit he deserves — but that's a story for another day).
When I heard people saying negative things about him, I would get really angry, but he never let it get him down.
One day I asked him why he never got mad when people said mean things about him, and he said:
“Baby, it’s not what they call you. It’s what you answer to that counts.”
Gives me chills just thinking about it!
He was steadfast in his values and his vision. He knew who he was and what he was fighting for, and that’s what he stayed focused on.
(To be clear, this is not about being above feedback, critique, or constructive criticism. But rather it's about the power of knowing who you are.)
Gimme a 💙 or a 🙌🏻 if you found this as useful as I did!
