Kentucky’s first recorded h**p crop was planted in 1775 near Danville, and for generations h**p was woven into the story of our farms, families, and economy.

By the mid-1800s, h**p extracts were even recognized in the U.S. Pharmacopeia, and cannabis preparations could be found in American pharmacies. It stayed there until 1942.

Then, during World War II, America turned back to h**p for rope, cordage, parachutes, and other wartime essentials. In Kentucky, even young people, including 4-H participants, helped support h**p production tied to the war effort. U.S. h**p production peaked in the 1943–1944 period.
