A FOURTH-GENERATION MIDWIFE JUST OPENED CENTRAL VIRGINIA'S FIRST BLACK-OWNED BIRTHING CENTER.

Every child enters the world only once.

The environment they enter—and the care their family receives during one of life's most vulnerable moments—can shape memories that last forever.

That's what makes this milestone so meaningful.

Fourth-generation midwife Racha Tahani Lawler-Queen has opened Gather Grounded Midwifery, the first Black-owned birthing center in Central Virginia.

Located in Chesterfield County, the center was created to provide comprehensive, personalized care for low-risk pregnancies while offering families a space designed to feel welcoming, peaceful, and deeply supportive.

The center offers prenatal care, postpartum support, water births through its Freedom Birth Suite, and out-of-hospital deliveries for eligible pregnancies. Inside, families will find thoughtfully designed spaces including a birthing cottage, family gathering room, healing room, and dedicated birthing suite—all intended to create an environment where parents feel safe, respected, and empowered throughout the birth experience.

But this story reaches beyond one beautiful building.

It speaks to something larger.

Birth is one of humanity's oldest shared experiences, yet every family deserves care that honors not only their medical needs, but also their culture, values, and dignity.

Research has consistently shown that respectful communication, trust between providers and patients, and access to quality maternal care all contribute to healthier outcomes for both mothers and babies. Expanding the diversity of birth professionals and increasing access to different models of maternity care can help more families find the support that feels right for them.

One especially inspiring aspect of Gather Grounded Midwifery is its commitment to the future.

Beyond caring for today's families, the center includes an apprenticeship program designed to train the next generation of birthworkers, helping pass along knowledge, skills, and mentorship to future caregivers.

That may be one of the most lasting legacies of all.

Because true change doesn't end with opening a door.

It continues when that door stays open for those who come after.

Every generation has the opportunity to leave something better than it found it.

Sometimes that's a discovery.
Sometimes it's a business.
Sometimes it's a place where new life begins.

And perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can offer a child is ensuring they enter a world where their family feels seen, supported, and cared for from the very first breath.

💛 Every family deserves compassionate, respectful care during one of life's most important moments. What qualities do you think matter most in a birth experience? We'd love to hear your thoughts below.
