Congratulations to Mrs. Sylvia on becoming the first state certified community based doula. We are so proud of you. When you see her please stop and show her some love for the incredible work she does for the state of Arkansas. Here is a little bit about Mrs. Sylvia.

My name is Sylvia Halliburton, and I am a passionate perinatal doula devoted to providing compassionate care and support. I approach every perinatal journey with respect and empathy, whether supporting families at a hospital, a birthing center, or during a home birth. I am the founder of Arkansas Birthing Partners and Family Power Hub, which I have led for two years, and I have served as a Volunteer Bunch Leader for the Arkansas Birthing Project for over 10 years, supporting mothers and families across central, eastern, and southeast Arkansas.

This is for the dads, the partners, the one's witnessing the intensity and miracle of birth.

She's incredibly strong. She might look like she's got it. But she needs you to know:

✨️Labor is aptly named, it is WORK
✨️We don't need you to fix anything, we just need you to be there and supporting
✨️Movement helps, and you can do so much to help, especially when we're getting tired
✨️Words matter. It's a hard and vulnerable time, your encouragement means everything
✨️Birth doesn't happen in minutes, and decisions around birth take time.
✨️Support can literally change how birth happens. Labor progresses best when she feels safest, loved, supported.

Partners, you might not be the person giving birth, but you have a big role.

👇🏽 Tag a dad below who needs to prep, or tag the partner who was amazing and showed up in all the right ways.

Cluster feeding or low milk supply?

Cluster feeding is completely typical newborn and infant behavior. Frequency of feeding alone does not indicate a low supply.

A low supply would include lack of enough diaper output, lower than expected weight gain, signs of dehydration, and lack of swallowing at the breast.

If you're concerned about milk supply or baby's behavior while breastfeeding, see a lactation consultant.

Where you surprised by cluster feeding?

Birth doulas don't just support the person giving birth. They nurture entire families.🙏🏽

They are present in moments that are raw, intense, and life-changing and how they show up matters. Their impact shapes how a family experiences birth, how they step into parenthood, and the confidence a parent feels the first time they hold their baby.

This is the care DONA International has championed for over 30 years. Doulas trained to show up with skill, intention, and whole-family care.

This , we celebrate every birth doula making that difference around the world, one family at a time. 🌍

Midwives and Ob/Gyns provide care during pregnancy. In many countries, a midwife is the standard of care unless higher level of care is needed. In the US, most people work with an OB/GYN. This is not because obstetricians improve outcomes for all, but rather our system has more ob/gyns available than midwives.

This has started to change with increased midwifery programs and public health working towards reducing maternity care deserts in the US. Research shows that the midwifery model of care is safe, and in some cases improves outcomes.

Did you work with a midwife or an Ob/gyn for your pregnancies? Did you get to work with both?

A 2025 study published in AJOG adds powerful, up-to-date data showing associations between doula care and improved maternal and newborn outcomes.

Key Maternal Outcomes:

More vaginal births after cesarean (VBAC): For every 100 patients who received doula care, there were 15 to 34 additional VBACs compared with those without doula care.

Higher postpartum follow-up attendance: 5 to 6 more per 100 received postpartum office visits.

Key Neonatal / Infant Outcomes

Increased exclusive breastfeeding rates: Babies whose families had doula support were more likely to breastfeed exclusively.

Fewer preterm births (and early preterm births): Doula-supported births showed a reduction in preterm birth rates.

In short, the study links doula care with improvements in birth outcomes — across birth mode (more VBACs), infant health (less prematurity), and early infant care (breastfeeding, postpartum follow-up).
