Welcome to Aphasia Caroline 💙
Hello everyone, and welcome to our community.
If you are here, it’s likely because you or someone you love is navigating a world where words don’t always come easily. We want you to know right away: Aphasia is a loss of words, not a loss of intellect.
What is Aphasia?
Aphasia is a communication disorder usually caused by a stroke or brain injury. It affects the ability to speak, read, write, or understand language.
Imagine knowing exactly what you want to say—the thought is clear in your mind—but when you open your mouth, the wrong word comes out, or no word comes out at all. It can feel like being a tourist in a country where you don’t speak the language, even in your own home.
How it Impacts Lives
Aphasia can be incredibly isolating. It affects:
Confidence: Many pull away from social gatherings due to the struggle with words.
Independence: Tasks like ordering coffee or making a phone call become daunting hurdles.
Connection: It changes how we interact with our spouses, children, and friends.
