The temperatures may be starting to drop, but that isn’t stopping our little explorers! Our Ducklings bundled up and headed outside to enjoy the fresh fall air, explore their surroundings, and get their bodies moving. Outdoor play in cooler weather gives children opportunities to notice seasonal changes, experience different sights, sounds, and textures, and strengthen their gross motor skills through running, climbing, balancing, and exploring!

Our littlest Hummingbirds are combining story time with some important physical development! As teachers read colorful stories and talk about the pictures, our infants practice strengthening their neck, back, shoulder, and core muscles through tummy time and supported sitting.

Lifting their heads to see the pages, reaching toward pictures, and working to sit upright all help build the strength and coordination needed for future milestones like rolling, sitting independently, crawling, and exploring!

A few weeks into the school year, what's new is starting to become familiar and those everyday routines are beginning to matter more than you might realize. 💚

For young children, routines are about so much more than staying on schedule. Familiar moments throughout the day can help children know what to expect, feel secure during transitions, build healthy habits, and create a stronger sense of connection and belonging.

The good news? Routines don’t have to be complicated. ✨ Getting dressed in the morning, a hug before school, talking together at dinner, or reading the same bedtime story each night can all become comforting cues children learn to count on.

At The Nest Schools, we see that same power in the classroom. Predictable rhythms give children the security of knowing what comes next while leaving plenty of room to play, explore, create, move, and discover.

As your family settles into a new school-year rhythm, remember: children need predictable parents, not perfect parents. 💚

Our little artists had a colorful time exploring paint and expressing their creativity! Using thin paintbrushes, our learners experimented with different colors, strokes, lines, and marks as they created their own unique masterpieces!

Working with these smaller brushes is also wonderful fine motor practice! Grasping, guiding, and controlling a thin paintbrush helps strengthen the small muscles in the hands and fingers while building hand-eye coordination and pencil control skills that will later support writing and drawing!

Our littlest learners stretched, wiggled, balanced, and moved their bodies during Baby & Toddler Yoga! Through simple, age appropriate poses and playful movements, our little yogis practiced balance, flexibility, coordination, and body awareness while having lots of fun along the way.

Yoga also gives young children opportunities to strengthen their growing muscles, explore new ways their bodies can move, and practice moments of calm and focus. From tiny stretches to some very creative poses, these little yogis did an amazing job!

Nest Play Curriculum is growing right alongside our children!

As we enter Year 6 we’re introducing thoughtful updates designed to make purposeful play even more intentional, adaptable, and connected.

With clearer learning goals, more ways for teachers to bring activities to life, and parent-friendly activity summaries that show what children are learning along the way, these updates make Nest Play even more meaningful for teachers, children, and families.

When we understand the why behind the play, we can see just how much learning is happening in every moment. ✨

Our Robins had fun strengthening their early writing and fine motor skills by practicing the letters in their names! Using their fingers to trace letters in sensory trays gave our learners a hands-on way to explore letter formation, recognition, and sequencing.

This playful sensory experience also helps build the finger strength and coordination needed for future pencil control. The best part? If a letter didn’t turn out quite right, they could simply smooth out the tray and try again!

BIG news for The Nest Schools! ⭐🎉
Our proprietary Nest Play Curriculum, which guides learning across our schools, has received exciting recognition from not one, but TWO states!

⭐ Ohio has approved Nest Play through its Step Up To Quality program.
⭐ North Carolina has named Nest Play an approved curriculum through the North Carolina Child Care Commission and NC DCDEE.

While these recognitions come from Ohio and North Carolina, they celebrate the curriculum our children and teachers experience across The Nest Schools every day. 💚

They reinforce something we’ve always believed: play-based learning is REAL learning. Every tower built, question sparked, masterpiece created, pretend game played, and discovery made is an opportunity to build the skills, confidence, creativity, and curiosity children will carry with them for years to come. ✨

We’re incredibly proud of Nest Play, the educators who bring it to life, and this recognition of the meaningful learning happening in our classrooms every day.

Our Cardinals took Shape Roadmaps to a whole new level! Usually, teachers create our shape roads on the floor, but this time we switched things up and brought them onto the wall! Children moved their little vehicles along the blue tape, carefully following the lines, turns, and points of each shape.

Taking this familiar activity vertical added a fun new challenge while encouraging shape recognition, hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and gross motor skills as children reached up, down, and across to navigate their vehicles along the roads. It was such a simple and exciting way to get our bodies moving while exploring shapes!

New school year, new routines, and sometimes…new behaviors. 😅💛

Changes in schedules, classrooms, expectations, and everyday routines can be a lot for children to process. When children don’t yet have the words or the developmental skills to explain everything they’re feeling, those feelings can show up through their behavior instead.

So when the after-school meltdown happens or emotions suddenly feel a little bigger than usual, there may be more going on beneath the surface.

Yesterday, we talked about what to do when those tough moments get the best of us. Today, we’re looking at what those big moments might be telling us about them.

Because sometimes, big behavior is a bigger message. 💛

🌟💗 Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Kendra! 💗🌟

This week, we’re shining our Teacher Spotlight on the wonderful Ms. Kendra!

Ms. Kendra is one of our amazing Hummingbirds C teachers, but the love she brings to our school reaches far beyond her classroom! You can often find her sharing her warmth with our Ducklings and spreading smiles throughout the rest of the school, too!

Kind, bubbly, and full of love, Ms. Kendra brings such a joyful energy to each day. She is always ready to lend a helping hand, give a little extra love, and make the children around her feel special!

Ms. Kendra is truly an essential part of our Nest Ken Caryl family, and we are so lucky to have her! Please help us show Ms. Kendra some love and appreciation for everything she brings to our Nest!

New routines, busy mornings, changing schedules, big feelings… back-to-school season can be an adjustment for parents, too. 💛

Sometimes, in the middle of all that change, we lose our cool. We raise our voice. We react in a way we wish we hadn’t. What happens next matters.

Taking the time to repair, to acknowledge what happened, apologize, and talk about the feelings involved shows children something incredibly important: We all have big emotions. We all make mistakes. And we can take responsibility and make things right.

As your family settles into a new school-year rhythm, remember that emotional intelligence isn’t about handling every moment perfectly. Sometimes, some of the most meaningful lessons come from what we do after a hard moment. 🪺💛

Ducklings turned an everyday material into a fun painting tool! We wrapped rolling pins in bubble wrap, dipped them into paint, and rolled them across paper to create colorful, bumpy patterns.

As the children pushed and rolled the pins, they explored texture, color, and cause and effect while strengthening their hand-eye coordination, fine motor control, and upper-body muscles. It was a fun, hands-on way to discover that art can be made with more than just paintbrushes!

Today, Robins practiced their letters and numbers with a fun hands-on tracing activity! Using Expo markers and reusable tracing sheets, the children carefully followed the dotted lines to practice forming each letter and number.

As they traced, they were strengthening their fine motor skills, pencil control, hand-eye coordination, and early writing skills while also building familiarity with letter and number shapes. Plus, using Expo markers made practicing extra fun! The Robins could trace, erase, and try again as many times as they liked! 🌟
