The Alverno, Trinity Health Senior Communities’ skilled nursing community in Clinton, Iowa, will present an education program for family members, friends, and caregivers of people living with memory challenges on Thursday, October 22 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at 849 13th Avenue in Clinton. Certified Dementia Practitioner Elizabeth Heard, chaplain at The Alverno, will facilitate.

Participants will learn:
• What dementia is and how it affects the brain
• Common changes in behavior and communication
• Practical strategies for meaningful interactions
• Techniques to reduce frustration and improve understanding
• What resources are available to support professional and family caregivers

With more than 20 years of experience supporting individuals living with dementia and educating caregivers, healthcare professionals, and families, Elizabeth Heard brings expertise and compassion to this important topic. As a Certified Dementia Practitioner and Chaplain, Elizabeth is passionate about helping others better understand dementia and build meaningful connections with those affected by the disease.

Recently, Glacier Hills had the honor of welcoming Occupational Therapist and internationally-renowned dementia care and education specialist Teepa Snow for a full day of onsite and streaming trainings and presentations. Founder of Positive Approach to Care -- an organization dedicated to providing practical, evidence-informed techniques to help caregivers, families, and healthcare professionals better understand and support people living with dementia -- Teepa provided outstanding insights and strategies to the Glacier Hills community. We are very grateful to the Glacier Hills Foundation for making possible Teepa's visit and impact on our team's effective and compassionate approach to delivering high-quality memory care.

In the spirit of the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy and THSC's legacy of heartfelt hospitality and holistic healthcare, the Sister Catherine McAuley Living Mission Award is presented to the colleague who most demonstrates and embodies our Core Values and Mission as a "compassionate, transforming healing presence" for our residents and colleagues. The McAuley's Licensed Practical Nurse James Manugas received the 2026 Second Place Sister Catherine McAuley Award from among colleagues all across THSC last week. On Wednesday, October 7, The Alverno's Director of Nursing, Alley May, received Trinity Health Senior Communities' First Place Sister Angela Gillespie Servant Leader Award. This honor recognizes the people leader who has demonstrated outstanding Mission-driven leadership ability that exhibits communication, trust, cooperation, and respect for differences among team members. Alley May was selected among all THSC colleagues nominated across the country for both her "extraordinary acts of service" and "everyday gestures of kindness." She holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Phoenix and enjoyed roles of progressive leadership within the hospitality industry for more than two decades before joining the Woodland Village team. Her expertise in operations, customer service, and training are among the many leadership talents Dena will bring to the role, and her commitment to colleague, resident, and family satisfaction will serve her well.
