BIG BALD ROCK TRAIL : Photo Set 4
The Big Bald Rock Trail takes you atop a broad granite dome in Plumas National Forest where you have wide-ranging views across the Northern Sierra Nevada. It’s an easy hike with a big payoff!

Distance: 2 or more miles (depending on how much you wander in the granite). We did over 4 miles of exploring.

Difficulty: Easy, but scrambling makes it moderate.

Big Bald Rock was born millions of years ago as an underground swell of hot magma that slowly cooled to form granite. Erosion eventually exposed the bare rock from which this prominent feature, a granite dome, gains its name.

There isn’t much actual trail, but once on top of Big Bald Rock you can wander wherever you wish.

The trail begins at the west side of the parking lot and follows a seasonal creek. The sugar pinen forest was decimated by one of California's notorious wild fires, the 2020 North Complex Fire. Because of this, there is little to no shade (except in the shadow of boulders) so take plenty of water during warm temperatures.

On this day the weather was sunny and mild!

The rock formations are surreal!

Yes it was an amazing 2.5 hours we had wandering for 5.7 miles exploring and scrambling along the granite boulders of Big Bald Rock!

In 2020, the Bear Fire tore through Berry Creek and burned away the towering trees and expansive brush that covered the now-exposed batholith. There is shade only in the shadow of boulders.

An amazing 2.5 hours wandering through the Big Bald Rock batholith near Oroville Lake, California! We wandered for 5.7 miles, and did some exploring and scrambling along the way! Exploring this area is like taking a walk on Mars!

Big Bald Rock is in Plumas National Forest, just northeast of Oroville, California. It is an easy half-mile hike (at minimum) that rewards you with stunning, panoramic views of Lake Oroville, the Sutter Buttes (largely obscured by smog on this day), and the distant Coast Ranges. The rock formations are amazing. You can wander the area for miles (moderately difficult) or just take the short hike to catch a glimpse.

What an amazing 2.5 hours we had wandering through the Big Bald Rock batholith near Oroville Lake, California! We wandered through this amazing landscape for 5.7 miles, and did some exploring and scrambling along the way!

We hit the trail at 8.45am and had a light breeze and very moderate temperatures. We also had the entire place to ourselves on Memorial Day weekend! Exploring this area is like taking a walk on Mars!

We enjoyed a wonderful afternoon relaxing in the shade and kayaking at the Forebay Aquatic Center below Oroville Dam in California! Best site to launch is just past the aquatic center to the right, at the small launch ramp!

The mission of the Forebay Aquatic Center is to promote education, recreation, boating and water safety, and competitive water sports in and beyond the Feather River Watershed.
