Salty Weekend dump.

Josie lives her best life at the beach with long car rides and lots of places to visit. Everyone thinks she needs a sister 😂 but I’m not ready for another fur-baby. She is the queen and spoilt rotten right now.

Mya introducing “Sheila” 📸 to LBK with a casual photo shoot of the girls.

🏖️ Father’s Day to celebrate honey in his fave place. And one of my best memories of my dad when we visited longboat as a family when Mya was 1. My dad always loved going to the beach. I wish he were here to enjoy Home By The Sea with us. But I think about him every time we pass the place we stayed a half mile from where we are now. I miss him very much.

➡️Deuteronomy Recap! In what feels like a heartfelt farewell speech from Moses to the Israelites recapping the laws and important lessons that God had given them during their 40 year journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. I was reminded in all the details of the laws to step back, keep it simple and REMEMBER that the covenant the most important detail is that God wants relationship with His people. And the importance of the ❤️ HEART where it seems to pop up a lot in the book. And so the flicker began, If I were asked when did the ❤️HEART RATE TRAINING FOR LIFE program become a thought - it was during the time of reading Deuteronomy.

In my bible study EXPERIENCE GOD we ask the question: where is GOD moving? Be GOD CENTERED, not SELF centered. Pay attention to the invitation to join Him in His work. And then take a leap of faith so He can work through you to accomplish His purpose and eternal plan. Well, THESE are the moments that I felt an invitation at my heart door to join Him in loving Him with all your heart. Focusing on heart rate, God love and our love for Him.

After completing the 80/20 performance coaching certification which is about running 80% easy and 20% heart after testing lactate threshold heart rate. I begin thinking about a program to move miles better, love God better and share the gospel better.

I just had a mom who chose to care for my brother and me pass away a week ago. My stepmother was actually the catalyst that changed the direction of my life. We all know people who, the moment they step into our lives, change something forever. For me, that person was Maria. When I was a teenager, my dad traveled to America from South Africa on business. Because of Maria, my dad remarried. Because of her, we all immigrated to America. Because of her, I later met Matt and now have Mya and Kate. I am so thankful for my stepmother and loved her for all the details of many chapters written over the last 30+ years.

So, in honor of her, my mom, my mother-in-law, and mothers everywhere—from those with newborns to those with adult children, to moms who have lost children, to moms who have lost their own mothers, to those who have chosen not to be mothers, to the moms who are moms to other people’s kids, to those who live far from their moms, to those with strained mother-daughter relationships, and to those who yearn to be mothers—I extend love and hugs to women everywhere for all the things we do every. single. day.

I saw something on Instagram this week that said, “Grief = unexpressed love,” and described grief as a beautiful emotion. Because one thing is certain—we never have enough time to say the things we want to say, enjoy the things we want to enjoy in the chaos of it all, and don’t have enough time to express all the love we feel inside in the busyness of life... Both to our moms and to our kids.

Wishing you time to stop and enjoy Mother’s Day. I see you. I feel you. And I know it’s hard and amazing all in the same breath.

RIP Maria | Ouma
1943-2024

We all know people who change the direction of your life the moment they step into it, for me that person was Maria. Because of her, my dad remarried. Because of her, we moved to America. Because of her, I later met Matt and have Mya and Kate. If you had the chance to meet Maria, the direction of your life may not have taken a detour like mine, but you would probably have left feeling a little smarter. She loved to chat about history, architecture, theology, Greek or South African cooking, and of course her ideas on politics. And as you say goodbye you would probably leave with a cookie or two, or tons of leftovers. And all through the conversations she would tell you about her grandchildren and how much she loved them.

Christmas was one of her favorite holidays. She enjoyed decorating every corner of the house, but mostly she loved to give presents, and oh my goodness did she spoil everyone. Teddy, Mya, Hudson and Kate had the biggest Christmas stockings I’ve ever seen and gifts upon gifts to open through the night.

Maria was a wise woman who bravely faced many health challenges. We called her ‘ouma,’ and her absence leaves a void in our hearts. May she rest in peace alongside my dad in the comforting embrace of our Heavenly Father, free from pain. I imagine my dad playing the piano for her, a smile on her face, and then dancing together like the good ole days.

Maria was born in Minnesota and has two sons, Dean and Pete who still live there.

Creativity is at the heart of an artist, sprinkled with a little crazy expression. Looking at training plans + paces + routes can seem rigid and boring. Get a little intense and mad and embrace the craziness of the jogging artist. It’s who we are. Being creative and finding joy in moving miles is at the sole of a runner. Love is energetic and spontaneous and playful. So the training plan is black-and-white. Add a little color…join a group or jog alone. Jog at different times. Switch up the road to a trail. Play with nutrition. Embrace your choosing to be a runner as a student who creates and begins and erases and continues to be the artist who discovers and manipulates what works best for you. Find your expression. But remember that the artist must find her play, her joy, her love for the work…otherwise stagnation, boredom and the horrid creative block stifles the artist…aka burnout and getting stuck.

We must find expression and love in our day to day jogging.

So here is me creating something that’s been on my heart 😉 for years. A logo for a new pilot program. HEART RATE TRAINING FOR LIFE. Deets in profile link.

The story of Exodus is one of deliverance, faith, obedience, and God’s faithfulness to His promises.

What do you think about Exodus? What is your fave scripture? Biggest takeaway? What did you learn about God’s character?

This serves as a homework diary of sorts for me, and hopefully little summary of my first month in 2024 with the BIBLE RECAP book and my bible. I have listened to the Bible through podcast (Bible Recap and Bible in a Year) while jogging🏃‍♀️, in the car 🚗, traveling 🧳for 3 years and found myself ‘checking” it off my list 📝 but not really listening and paying attention in the background of my other activities.
So thankful it started the habit for me - and no matter where you are ...whether listening or reading through the Bible in a year it’s always good. God’s truth and HIStory is everything. Creating this space to learn and pray is a work in progress, and I am thankful that God gives us grace and loves us so much in the brokenness of our busyness, stress, chaos and life.
And please give me grace in the space of learning the Bible. If you have anything to add, or correct, or thoughts around anything written here - please email let me know!
