🎨🖍️ Wet Chalk Exploration! 💦✨

Today, Ms. Olivia invited our Hummingbirds to explore a new art material! 🐦💛 The children used wet pieces of chalk on black construction paper, creating beautiful and colorful artwork for our classroom. 🖤🌈

As they experimented, our Hummingbirds discovered that wet chalk feels and looks different from dry chalk while strengthening their fine motor skills and expressing their creativity through mark-making. ✋🎨

🌟 Today’s Learning Goals:
✏️ Build fine motor grasp skills using a new wet material
🎨 Strengthen creative expression through mark-making
💦 Explore how wet chalk looks and feels different from dry chalk

We love watching our little artists explore, create, and make discoveries through hands-on learning! 🥰🖌️🐦

A few weeks into the school year, what's new is starting to become familiar and those everyday routines are beginning to matter more than you might realize. 💚

For young children, routines are about so much more than staying on schedule. Familiar moments throughout the day can help children know what to expect, feel secure during transitions, build healthy habits, and create a stronger sense of connection and belonging.

The good news? Routines don’t have to be complicated. ✨ Getting dressed in the morning, a hug before school, talking together at dinner, or reading the same bedtime story each night can all become comforting cues children learn to count on.

At The Nest Schools, we see that same power in the classroom. Predictable rhythms give children the security of knowing what comes next while leaving plenty of room to play, explore, create, move, and discover.

As your family settles into a new school-year rhythm, remember: children need predictable parents, not perfect parents. 💚

🥄🔍 Large & Small Exploration! 🔍🥄

Today, our little learners explored the concept of big and small through a simple, hands-on activity! 🌟 We provided a large spoon and a small spoon and encouraged the children to look closely, compare, and discover the differences between the two. 🥄✨

Through this activity, the children practiced:

🔎 Comparing objects by size
📏 Identifying differences between large and small
🧩 Building early sorting and organizing skills
🧠 Developing early math and observation skills

It’s amazing how everyday objects can turn into exciting learning opportunities! 💛😊

📚✨ Picture Walk in action! ✨📚

Today, our Robins explored new books by looking closely at the covers, making thoughtful predictions, and using their observation skills to get started! 👀💭📖

🎨 They drew what they thought the story might be about, then flipped through the pages to see how close their predictions were! 🔍➡️📚

What a fun way to build engagement, comprehension, critical thinking, and a love for reading! ❤️📖🌟

🌟 Routine helps our little learners feel safe, confident, and ready to learn! 🧠💛

When children know what to expect and what comes next, they’re better able to navigate transitions, handle changes, and build independence. 🧒👧✨

Today, we practiced using our visual schedule by thinking about what comes first, second, and last as we worked together to put our classroom routine back in order after our daily plan got a little scrambled! 🔄📚

Learning what comes next helps our kiddos feel more confident, prepared, and in control of their day! 🌈💪🏼💫

Nest Play Curriculum is growing right alongside our children!

As we enter Year 6 we’re introducing thoughtful updates designed to make purposeful play even more intentional, adaptable, and connected.

With clearer learning goals, more ways for teachers to bring activities to life, and parent-friendly activity summaries that show what children are learning along the way, these updates make Nest Play even more meaningful for teachers, children, and families.

When we understand the why behind the play, we can see just how much learning is happening in every moment. ✨

BIG news for The Nest Schools! ⭐🎉
Our proprietary Nest Play Curriculum, which guides learning across our schools, has received exciting recognition from not one, but TWO states!

⭐ Ohio has approved Nest Play through its Step Up To Quality program.
⭐ North Carolina has named Nest Play an approved curriculum through the North Carolina Child Care Commission and NC DCDEE.

While these recognitions come from Ohio and North Carolina, they celebrate the curriculum our children and teachers experience across The Nest Schools every day. 💚

They reinforce something we’ve always believed: play-based learning is REAL learning. Every tower built, question sparked, masterpiece created, pretend game played, and discovery made is an opportunity to build the skills, confidence, creativity, and curiosity children will carry with them for years to come. ✨

We’re incredibly proud of Nest Play, the educators who bring it to life, and this recognition of the meaningful learning happening in our classrooms every day.

Recognizing emotions in ourselves and others is a powerful skill, and today we practiced it using our emotions card sticks. In Amherst, OH, students explored how different feelings can show up, talked through strategies to calm our bodies when they feel sad, angry, or frustrated, and even tried copying the emotion cards. We wrapped up with a fun chant to celebrate understanding our feelings and supporting friends.

Nature Potions in Amherst, OH brought big science fun to our classroom. Ms. Jennie started by adding water to a bowl with leaves and pinecones, then showed the children how to mix them together. Using a stick as a spoon, kids practiced fine motor skills while exploring cause and effect as the materials changed the water.

Mediums is in full swing at The Nest! Today we explored the work of Henri Matisse and learned how he used scissors to cut colored paper and fabrics into bold, meaningful art. We brought that inspiration to life with scissors and construction paper, creating our own masterpieces.

Wired numbers made learning feel hands-on and fun. We explored numbers 0–10 and used bendable wires to shape each digit with our own hands, practicing careful control and matching. This activity supports number recognition while strengthening fine motor skills—great work, Amherst - OH!

New school year, new routines, and sometimes…new behaviors. 😅💛

Changes in schedules, classrooms, expectations, and everyday routines can be a lot for children to process. When children don’t yet have the words or the developmental skills to explain everything they’re feeling, those feelings can show up through their behavior instead.

So when the after-school meltdown happens or emotions suddenly feel a little bigger than usual, there may be more going on beneath the surface.

Yesterday, we talked about what to do when those tough moments get the best of us. Today, we’re looking at what those big moments might be telling us about them.

Because sometimes, big behavior is a bigger message. 💛

New routines, busy mornings, changing schedules, big feelings… back-to-school season can be an adjustment for parents, too. 💛

Sometimes, in the middle of all that change, we lose our cool. We raise our voice. We react in a way we wish we hadn’t. What happens next matters.

Taking the time to repair, to acknowledge what happened, apologize, and talk about the feelings involved shows children something incredibly important: We all have big emotions. We all make mistakes. And we can take responsibility and make things right.

As your family settles into a new school-year rhythm, remember that emotional intelligence isn’t about handling every moment perfectly. Sometimes, some of the most meaningful lessons come from what we do after a hard moment. 🪺💛
