Last week, I shared that my kids were heading back to school and that back-to-school germs often arrive right along with the backpacks and new routines.

So far, everyone is healthy, and we hope to keep that trend going! We’re continuing to reinforce handwashing and making sure we have the supplies we may need before the first cold, flu, or unexpected 2 a.m. fever arrives.

Thank you, Families Fighting Flu, for this timely reminder to prepare now, before someone gets sick. 🤧

🍎 School is back, routines are returning, and flu season is approaching.

Now is the time to prepare: review prevention habits, talk with your healthcare provider, and make a plan to keep your family healthy.

It’s that time again, backpacks, new routines and back-to-school germs. 🎒🦠

As a mom of three with one child starting third grade and two starting seventh, I’ve been through this rodeo before. Roughly 70% of children with the cold or flu miss at least one day of school or daycare.

This year, we’re reinforcing the basics:

🧼 Wash hands when arriving home and before eating
🤧 Cover coughs and sneezes
🙅 Avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth
🌡️ Speak up when something doesn’t feel right

And I’m stocked up with cold and flu supplies before that first 2 a.m. fever.

Here’s to a healthy, happy and prepared school year!

✈️ TRAVEL HEALTH FACT #6

An overseas disease outbreak can affect your trip, even if you never become sick.

The current Ebola outbreak is a timely example. Depending on where someone has traveled, public-health measures may affect return requirements, airport screening, flight routes, and travel timelines.

But this lesson extends far beyond a single outbreak. Disease activity, natural disasters, civil unrest, and other emergencies can quickly change international travel guidance.

Before every international trip:

✓ Check CDC destination pages and Travel Health Notices
✓ Review U.S. Department of State travel advisories
✓ Check every destination, connection, and layover
✓ Recheck the guidance shortly before departure—and again before returning home

Travel preparedness begins before you pack.

Information checked August 22, 2026. Guidance and requirements may change.

Travel Health Fact #5: Cruise Edition 🛳️

You packed for the pool, the excursions, and the dinners… but did you pack for the unexpected, like getting sick?

When most people think about illness on a cruise, stomach bugs may come to mind. But respiratory illnesses are actually the most common medical complaint on cruise ships.

Cruising brings travelers together in shared spaces for days at a time, from dining rooms and theaters to elevators and excursions. And as the recent MV Hondius hantavirus outbreak illustrated, cruise travel can also bring together people with very different recent travel and exposure histories.

Before you set sail:

🩺 Talk with your healthcare provider or a travel health specialist 4–6 weeks before your trip
💉 Stay up to date on recommended vaccines
🌎 Check CDC guidance for your destinations
🧼 Wash your hands often
😷 Consider masking in crowded indoor spaces
🧳 Pack a travel health kit with medications and supplies you may need if illness happens

The goal isn't to worry about getting sick on vacation, it's to be prepared for the unexpected so you can focus on enjoying the journey.

🏨 Travel Health Fact #4: Your hotel room may look clean, but clean and disinfected are not the same thing.

Research has found that high-touch hotel surfaces can still harbor germs after routine cleaning and in one hotel study, people with the common cold left rhinovirus on 35% of the surfaces tested. Researchers also demonstrated that the virus could transfer from contaminated surfaces to fingertips.

Think: 📺 remote controls, ☎️ phones, 🚪 door handles, and other frequently touched surfaces.

A few simple habits can help you stay prepared: wash or sanitize your hands, disinfect high-touch surfaces when you arrive, and pack the cold & flu essentials you'd want on hand if you start feeling sick away from home.

Because you can't control every surface you encounter while traveling, but you can control what you pack. ✈️

Live more. Risk less.

✈️ Travel Health Fact #3: Your biggest in-flight risk isn't the cabin air, it's who you're near and what you touch.

Modern commercial aircraft are equipped with HEPA filtration systems that exchange cabin air 20–30 times per hour and remove the vast majority of airborne particles.

Research suggests other factors deserve more of your attention:

🧍 Who's sitting near you. Studies consistently find that passengers seated within about two rows of someone with a respiratory illness have the greatest exposure risk, particularly on longer flights.

✋ What you touch. Tray tables, armrests, seat belts, and lavatory touchpoints can become contaminated, and some viruses can survive on these surfaces long enough to create opportunities for transmission.

The good news? A few simple habits can make a meaningful difference:

✔️ Wipe down your tray table before eating.
✔️ Wash or sanitize your hands after using the lavatory.
✔️ Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth until your hands are clean.
✔️ If someone nearby appears ill, consider wearing a well-fitting respirator, such as an N95.

Travel health isn't about avoiding travel, it's about understanding where the real risks are and taking practical, evidence-based steps to reduce them.

Prepared. Not Scared.

✈️ Travel Health Fact #2: Before You Board

Travel Health Fact: Security screening trays had the highest frequency of respiratory virus contamination among the airport surfaces tested in one international airport study.

Your travel journey begins long before you step onto an airplane. Whether you arrive by rideshare, metro, shuttle, or your own vehicle, you've likely already touched dozens of shared surfaces before entering the terminal. Once inside the airport, that exposure continues as you move through check-in, security, and your departure gate.

The Evidence: Researchers sampled frequently touched surfaces throughout an international airport to better understand where travelers may encounter respiratory viruses. Security screening trays had the highest frequency of respiratory virus contamination among the surfaces tested. Respiratory viruses were also detected on passport control counters and stair handrails, reinforcing that shared, high-touch surfaces are common throughout the airport environment.

What You Can Do:
✔ Wash your hands with soap and water after passing through security whenever possible.
✔ If soap and water aren't available, use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol, as recommended by the CDC.
✔ Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth until you've cleaned your hands.

Travel is a series of shared environments, not just a flight. Building simple hand hygiene habits throughout your journey can help reduce your risk and let you focus on enjoying your trip.

✈️ Introducing our Travel Health Facts series.

Travel opens the door to new experiences, but it also means moving through many shared environments before you ever reach your destination.

A recent systematic review and meta-analysis of 429 studies found that about 1 in 3 travelers reported respiratory symptoms. That's a reminder that travel health isn't about a single flight or one destination, it's about every step of the journey.

From ground transportation and airport terminals to commercial flights, hotels, conferences, restaurants, and social settings, each stop presents new opportunities for exposure.

The good news? Most travel health recommendations are simple, practical, and backed by science.

Over the coming weeks, we'll share evidence-based travel health facts and easy habits you can use before, during, and after travel to help reduce your risk and travel with confidence.

Because being prepared isn't about expecting the worst, it's about being ready to enjoy the journey.

🚢 Cruise season is in full swing... but viruses don't take vacations.

Earlier this year, the MV Hondius became the first cruise ship in recorded history to experience a hantavirus outbreak at sea. While rare, it served as an important reminder: respiratory illnesses remain the #1 medical reason passengers visit cruise ship medical centers.

That doesn't mean you should cancel your trip, it means you should travel prepared.

Before you sail:
✔️ Know the early signs of respiratory illness (fever, fatigue, headache, muscle aches)
💧 Stay hydrated—dry ship air can weaken your body's natural defenses.
🎒 Pack a few health essentials before you leave home. A little preparation can save time, stress, and an expensive visit to the ship's medical center.

The best cruise memories are the ones where everyone stays healthy and enjoys the journey. ⚓☀️
