Los Altos Rotary AIDS Project - Child AIDS Prevention Working together to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS in Africa Box 794, Los Altos, CA 94023.

The program, launched by Dude Angius, President of the Rotary Club of Los Altos in 1989, is a District 5170 program designed to educate others about AIDS, change attitudes and behavior concerning the disease, support those afflicted, and encourage Rotary's involvement in confronting the pandemic. • 95% of these babies would be HIV-free if both mother and child are treated.
• 122,000 children in sub-Saharan Africa became infected with HIV in 2015, mostly during childbirth or while mothers nurse them. CURRENT FOCUS of LOS ALTOS ROTARY AIDS PROJECT: Child AIDS
Prevention (CAP) – Working together to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS, particularly in Africa. Started under the leadership of Rich Casey, President of LARAP and AIDS Project District 5170 Chair, Los Altos Rotary’s Child AIDS Prevention (CAP) project is now led by Marlene Cowan. CAP encourages Rotarians, in the US and worldwide, and other organizations to work together to raise funds with the goal of eliminating Mother-To-Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS (PMTCT). CAP and partners focus on countries with the greatest need then provide education and training; counseling; HIV testing; and treatment. This endeavor has received three Rotary Foundation grants for training Liberian healthcare workers in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. Trainees learn to counsel pregnant women how to prevent infection of their babies during birth and breastfeeding. To expand our reach and facilitate medical challenges, LARAP forged an important partnership with Save the Children, the leading international NGO focused on child and maternal health. We are now fundraising to meet the AIDS challenge in Tanzania and Nepal. PAST SERVICE PROJECTS

In Africa, which people benefitted from Los Altos Rotary AIDS Project?
Doctors and health workers benefitted through updated knowledge about HIV/AIDS in order to reduce HIV transmission from unsuspecting mothers to their babies.
In Liberia, three Rotary matching grants (2010 – 2016) supported AIDS education and Child AIDS Prevention (abbreviated as CAP).
In the grant activities, Dr. Arthur Ammann of Global Strategies teamed up with us initially to inform Liberian health workers and pregnant women about PMTCT (prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV). See the photos below of young mothers, taken by Dr. Jack Higgins while on duty in Liberia.
Later, Save the Children’s staff carried out medical work (youth AIDS education, HIV testing and training community workers) in expanded zones to protect Liberian children and their mothers from HIV/AIDS.

Los Altos Rotary AIDS Project post #3 this week.

What was the reaction to “The Los Altos Story” film?
In August 1990, it was broadcast on the Financial News Network. Then it won Cable TV’s ACE award for Best Public Affairs Special, followed by the prestigious George F. Peabody Award for broadcast excellence in May 1991. Numerous awards recognized its powerful emotional content was conveyed through the quality of its interviews. Today, it is still changing attitudes about AIDS.
Here we see Robin Young, producer of The Los Altos Story" film with Greg Hobbit whose film team shot the video and Dude Angius, whose passion propelled his family's AIDS story to transform attitudes about HIV/AIDS.

How did get one father’s message about AIDS reach people around the world?
Dude Angius was invited to show this award-winning, 30 minute video to 20,000 Rotary Club presidents at the 1992 Rotary International Convention. They carried its touching humanitarian message to their Rotary Clubs networked around the world. It’s now translated into 7 languages, using volunteer efforts to reduce HIV/AIDS infections by education, prevention and updated treatment.

Post #2 this week. How did the ten courageous volunteers help fight HIV/AIDS?
They recruited Hollywood talent—news correspondant Robin Young--to produce a 30 minute video focused on changing attitudes about AIDS. “The Los Altos Story” documentary is still available on DVD. To fund its early duplication and mailing costs, they began raising funds from NGO’s, corporations, Rotary International and private supporters.
Twenty-five years later here we see the film’s producer Robin Young, wearing headphones and again interviewing Dude Angius’ Task Force of ten. Mr. Angius is in a blue shirt, seated near her and Mary Prochnow, first co-Chairman of the group. The second co-Chair was Dick Hasenpflug, standing in center of the third row. The Hollywood TV crew of Greg Hoblit , leaning close to Dude Angius, shot much of the footage conveying Dude Angius’ humanitarian story about HIV/AIDS victims.

AIDS relief--How did THAT happen? You can see it in 7 posts. Keep checking here for one week.

One father’s grief at losing his son to AIDS sparked new courage around the world. Thirty years ago, an AIDS diagnosis was a death verdict, silenced by fear and tremendous social stigma. And it still is today in many parts of the world.

The father--Dude Angius--gathered his courage to announce his family’s AIDS crisis and ask for help at his Los Altos Rotary Club. He wanted his son’s death to deliver a positive effect. Ten volunteers in his Rotary Club— some of whom he did not even know well—offered to help him…somehow. Check their final decision in tomorrow’s facebook post.

Leading HIV/AIDS authority Dr. Art Amman inspired all members attending a recent Los Altos Altos Rotary meeting, with his updates on progress fighting this still-destructive epidemic. We look forward to a time when he can tell us that HIV/AIDS is not still devastating regions in the world.

The Rotary Club of Los Altos and its Rotary AIDS Project played a role in spreading awareness and addressing the epidemic. In 1989, Los Altos Rotarians produced and distributed “The Los Altos Story,” a Peabody Award-winning video that chronicled the anguish of Rotarian Dude Angius, whose son d
