My paternal grandfather made his transition from this plane, a year prior, to my mother’s passing. My mother gave me sweet moments, thousands of them!
And before tragedy entered our home, there was another person who filled my childhood with wonder.
My paternal grandfather.
To this day I cannot hear classical music without thinking of him.
He was a gentle man.
Patient.
Loving.
Curious about the world.
He believed beauty mattered.
Not only beautiful things we could see, but beautiful things we could hear.
Sometimes he would play classical music and invite me to listen.
At first I listened because he asked me to.
Soon I listened because I loved watching his face while the music played.
There was peace in him.
As if every note reminded him that the world still held goodness.
Without realizing it, he was teaching me how to listen.
Not only to music.
To silence.
To wonder.
To life itself.
