Here is an excellent little chart that confirms that what we call ADHD/ADD is not an abnormal brain, but one designed for intensive close attention with minimal filtering to make sure small relevant details are noted. This was a brain designed for safety and functioning of communities, monitoring all aspects of the community carefully.
These wonderful brains become severely over-stimulated in our extremely "noisy" environment with paradoxical outcomes. So, we ended up calling ADHD boys - "bad boys" - since they were bright non-achievers constantly in trouble. This misunderstand continues with labels like Oppositional Defiant Disorder even without the primary diagnostic characteristics. And this thought process continues to this day.
Enjoy looking at this chart and talk to your friends with ADHD [primarily but not all men] and ADD [primarily but not all women] for their insight.

Life Coaching -- Science, Fad, or Pseudoscience?
Evaluating whether coaching is a "legitimate science," a "fad," or a "pseudo-science" requires dividing the profession into two distinct categories: the academic foundation (the actual science) and the commercial marketplace (where the practice is applied).
The short answer is that coaching itself is not an independent, hard science—nor does it claim to be. Instead, it is an applied behavioral practice.
When done correctly, it is a legitimate, evidence-based discipline built on established psychological frameworks. However, because the industry is largely unregulated, it is simultaneously highly vulnerable to pseudo-scientific fads and "snake oil" marketing.
To evaluate it thoroughly, we must weigh its scientific legitimacy against its pseudo-scientific risks.
1. The Evidence: Why Coaching is Legitimate
When we look at "Evidence-Based Coaching" (EBC), the discipline is grounded in empirical research and established theories of human behavior, motivation, and neurobiology.
Theoretical Foundations
Legitimate coaching does not invent its own principles from thin air. It adapts peer-reviewed theories from broader scientific fields:
• Goal-Setting Theory (Locke & Latham): One of the most robust theories in organizational psychology, proving that specific, difficult goals lead to higher performance than vague goals.
• Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan): Focuses on human motivation, autonomy, and competence.
• Cognitive Behavioral Frameworks: Helping clients identify and restructure self-limiting beliefs or cognitive distortions.
Empirical Data (Does it actually work?)
Coaching is no longer relying solely on anecdotal "success stories." Over the past two decades, rigorous data has emerged. Multiple large-scale meta-analyses (which combine the results of numerous independent studies, including Randomized Controlled Trials) have consistently shown that workplace and executive coaching have a positive, statistically significant effect size on:
• Goal attainment
• Performance and skills
• Well-being and coping mechanisms
• Work attitudes and self-efficacy
The Verdict on Efficacy: Meta-analyses (such as those by Jones et al. and Erik de Haan) show that coaching yields measurable, repeatable, and positive organizational and individual outcomes. By scientific standards of behavioral intervention, the practice is effective.
2. The Dark Side: Why Coaching Can Look Like Pseudoscience
Despite its empirical backing, coaching frequently veers into pseudo-scientific territory. A 2022 study published on the prevalence of "bu****it" in sports science and coaching found that roughly 50% of surveyed practitioners had integrated or believed in pseudoscientific myths.
There are two primary reasons why coaching is often viewed as a fad or pseudo-science:
Lack of Regulation
Unlike clinical psychology, therapy, or medicine, "Coach" is not a legally protected title. Anyone can buy a domain name, create a social media profile, and call themselves a life coach, executive coach, or manifestation expert. Because there is no universal governing board with legal teeth (organizations like the International Coaching Federation, or ICF, offer credentials but cannot legally stop anyone from practicing), the barrier to entry is zero.
The Infiltration of "Pop-Psychology" and Myths
Because of this lack of regulation, the coaching marketplace is flooded with concepts that have been thoroughly debunked or severely distorted by science:
• Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP): Heavily utilized in commercial coaching, yet consistently classified by the scientific community as a pseudoscience.
• The "Left-Brain / Right-Brain" or "Learning Styles" Myth: Often used by low-tier coaches to categorize clients, despite being neuroscientifically inaccurate.
• Neuromythology / "Neuro-Babel": Many coaches sprinkle the words "neuroscience," "dopamine," or "neuroplasticity" into their marketing to sound scientific, using the terminology as a sales gimmick rather than a precise clinical tool.
3. Comparing the Landscape
To visualize where coaching sits, it helps to contrast its legitimate applications against its counterfeit counterparts:
Attribute Evidence-Based Coaching (Legitimate Practice) Pop-Psychology/Fad Coaching (Pseudoscience)
Source of Truth Peer-reviewed behavioral science, psychology, and organizational data. Anecdotes, personal "blueprints," mysticism, or debunked theories (e.g., NLP).
The Coach's Role Facilitator of thinking; helps the client find their own solutions using structured inquiry. The "Guru" or advice-giver who claims to have the secret formula for your life.
Promises Incremental, measurable progress based on goal-setting and behavioral shifts. Wild, immediate transformations ("Quantum leaps," "Manifesting 6-figures in 30 days").
Credentials Rigorous training program (e.g., ICF-accredited, university degrees in coaching psychology). Self-certified, weekend certificate programs, or no training at all.
Final Verdict: Science, Fad, or Pseudoscience?
Coaching is not a fad—it has outgrown that label through decades of organizational integration and sustained economic demand.
Instead, it is a legitimate, evidence-based practice trapped inside an unregulated commercial wild-west. *
The "Science" of Coaching: If defined as Evidence-Based Coaching, it is a legitimate applied science. It uses the scientific method to test interventions, relies on established psychological frameworks, and yields replicable data.
• The "Industry" of Coaching: If defined by the average influencer on social media, it frequently crosses into pseudoscience.
When seeking or evaluating coaching, the legitimacy relies entirely on the practitioner. A practitioner grounded in empirical psychology operates a legitimate behavioral practice; a practitioner relying on buzzwords and unproven "manifestation" blueprints is practicing pseudoscience.

Saturday -- April 25, 2026

Hi -

Tom Roseland here.

We have finally settled into Toledo, OHIO in the Old West End [Look up this wonderful neighborhood]!

I have decided to enter the much less stressful non-clinical and non-licensed world of Life, Health, & Academic Coaching.

This is the very rewarding business and profession world of LIFE, ACADEMIC, EXECUTIVE & HEALTH COACHING.

Please note: Coaching is NOT for medical care, counseling, therapy, diagnosis, treatment, or medications. I will refer to your provider for these functions.

COACHING IS assisting clients to discover their own skills, solutions, and resources in the many developing areas of their lives - especially in so many complex life situations, education & academic roles [high school, undergraduates, graduate student, faculty], executive & business roles, & healthcare conditions.

This means that I will NOT be making any diagnoses, treatment plans, or prescribing any medications or tests. Instead, I will be a motivator, educator, and trainer for a client's success - that is, a COACH.

To this end, I am actively preparing for the two major coaching certifications - the International Coaching Federation's ACC & PCC Certification and the National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach [NBHWC Certification] - to augment the training in my BS, BSN, MS, and MSN degree programs as well as my 35 years of clinical experience.

I will be opening my COACHING business in MAY, 2026 for active clients for Life, Academic, Executive & Health Coaching.

https://tomroseland.clientsecure.me/

I will also be available as a tutor, mentor, and consultant.

As I begin this process, I am looking for 3-4 clients to volunteer to help me develop my business skills and other details.

These 3-4 clients would benefit from a limited time of free coaching!

If you would like to be one of these 3-4 clients, please contact me by email at:

[email protected]

If you or someone you know would like access to coaching for their academic career, life adventures, professional life, and/or health care processes, please contact me or give my contact information to them:

Email: [email protected]
Text and/or Voice: (657) 287-6653
https://tomroseland.clientsecure.me/

Any referrals or suggestions to find clients would also be appreciated!!

Unfortunately, I can no longer provide PRO BONO care.

Oh, and I would also welcome a quick note about how you are doing to!

Thanks you,

Sincerely,

Tom Roseland

As a retired provider from the Family Practice and Psychiatric medical diagnosis and management field, I am dedicated to offering Health Education, Coaching, and Consultation. Many of my former patients expressed confusion regarding the complexities of the medical system. Despite patients claiming they "always take meds," the average adherence rate among providers is likely less than 40%. This disconnect creates confusion for both patients and providers.

Throughout my 35 years of practice, I achieved over 90% measurable long-term improvement in patient health, particularly in psychiatric treatment. This success stems from a framework centered on Active Listening, which fosters trust and allows for accurate assessments of a patient's life, learning style, past treatments, and goals. This two-way dialogue is crucial for ongoing patient engagement.

Health exists in all domains—physical, emotional, relational, economic, spiritual, medical, and intellectual—and these areas are highly interconnected. Unfortunately, many providers face time constraints and pressure to maximize encounters, leading to a focus on urgent care rather than comprehensive primary care.

My goal is to restore the essential elements of quality care. I will assess and listen to patients, explain concepts in an understandable manner, and ensure they can articulate what they have learned. By monitoring behavioral changes and health status improvements, we can alleviate burdens for both patients and providers, resulting in positive health outcomes.

I invite referrals for Health Education, Coaching, and Consultation. Upon request, I can provide a clinically focused summary of patient learning assessments and improvements from a retired family practice clinician's perspective. The cost is $50 for each 30-minute session of focused dialogue, support, and education, which can save time and reduce the need for urgent care and ER visits.

This is my commitment to enhancing your patient's health.
