Owen's Journey A true champion who has hiked the Grand Canyon twice with these conditions!

This is a support page for my son who has faced many challenges since birth with Brachial Plexus and recently developed Scoliosis and Pectus Excavatum due to the nerve damage.

I knew 2020 was going to be the most challenging year for Owen, but little did I know what else he'd have to overcome and miss out on. Either way, Owen has proven to me just how strong he really is. Throughout his entire life, he has never shown fear and has never given up! He has recovered from surgery, made up his school work, and has walked across that stage today to get his High School Diploma!

I know Owen's Journey doesn't end here, but neither will his achievements and I am so proud to be his father! I hope he will inspire others who feel the world is again'st them. Don't let anything stop you from following your dreams and conquering this world! I'm proud of you son!

I dropped Owen off at school for the first time after surgery this morning. This is just another milestone he has achieved. He might not get through the full day so he has permission to leave early if so. He also will not carry books and given extra time to get to classes. Rancho High has been very supportive but we are still worried about all the school work he has to catch up on to graduate in 3 months. He was out for 4 weeks so now that he is feeling better, he doesn't get a break because it's a lot of homework and crunch time.

Owen had his 3 week checkup on Feb 18th and had his bandages removed. Here he is with Dr. Andras who performed this miraculous surgery. She is an exceptional Dr. and made us feel better every step of the way. This wasn't just a simple procedure and it's one of the hardest experiences to go through as a family, especially for Owen but we are thankful we even have this option and found one of the best Dr.'s. Everything is healing nicely and as expected. He has another scar to add to his collection but it won't be too noticeable once it heals. He just started back to school today so we will see if he gets through a full day but he is doing much better now that he is eating more! The Dr. also told him to keep eating and he will be just fine.

Owen's Friends from High School came over to surprise him today! He has some great friends and Yes, they are all tall but he just took the crown for the tallest! 👍👍👍

If any close friends and family want to stop by to see Owen, let us know. He is still behind getting well enough to go back to school and it might help motivate him more than us. He needs to eat more becuz he is 6' tall and only 110lbs. If he cannot make it back to school next week, I'm afraid he won't graduate with his class and he isn't happy about that.

Today was Owen's follow up appointment at L.A.C.H. and since my last update, Owen is now able to get up out of bed, walk, shower and sit for a little while, without the pain meds. He can't get up for too long because he doesn't have much energy left. We've been very concerned about his loss of appetite, weight and weakness. He lost 10lbs as expected after surgery but since he was skinny to begin with, it is taking him longer to recover because he gets weak so fast and has to lay back down. We've made protein shakes, fast foods, ice cream, and anything and started watching him eat it because he would waste it. All he wanted was fruit which is totally fine but lacks calories. So we talked to the Dr. and she said week 3 is when he should start feeling a lot better and gain his appetite back. It's just that he had no fat to lose but told him he needs to eat. Besides that, everything with the surgery results look really good and is healing fine. After we left the Hospital, Owen had a big lunch so we all feel much better. As long as he keeps eating more, he'll be able to do more and get back to school and activities soon. He is off the meds, except Tylenol to manage pain and is doing more on his own and gaming in bed. We are happy the first 2 weeks are over because he did go through hell and back but now things are looking much better. He is a trooper but our new goal is to put on 20lbs!!

Today was the breaking point. I knew it was coming. We can only hold in all of these emotions for so long. Owen got mad because he is tired of the pain and doesn't think he is making much progress. I don't blame him for being angry because it makes me angry too. After our little breakdown, we regrouped as a family and went over the recovery plan. He is making more progress each day that adds up. With that in mind, he walked more, finally took a real shower and even got up on his own a few times so even though it was an emotional day, it was better then yesterday.

Yesterday was really bad for Owen and today he woke up in a lot more pain again so we called the Dr. and changed the dosage and medication schedule. What a relief because they said he wasn't supposed to be in so much pain if the meds are done right. He was able to walk more because he was in less pain. It's a struggle each day to find the right balance. He has to wake up every 2 hours, walk, take meds, eat, drink and sleep motionless. He hates it because we have to help him with everything and we want to see him back to normal but it's just going to take time. Thank you Jeff and Patty for the Gift for Owen!! He loves all the treats!! Love you all!!♥🚶👣

Today I installed some handrails for Owen because he gets light headed when walking. I have to finish making one side longer but now we can keep track of his progress. He has to get up every 2 hours to see how many laps he can walk. The hallway is one lap and so far, he has done 8 today. It's still to painful to sit upright but he tries everyday. 🚶👣

We had to stay an extra day in the hospital but today Owen was well enough to go home. Let me tell ya, that hour long ride home was not nice. The roads here in CA are so bad! Every dip, pothole, and bump really hurt his back and I couldn't do anything about it but drive the best I could. When we finally made it home, the first thing he wanted to do was measure himself and he gained almost 2" in height making him 6' tall! Then, he went right to bed to rest his painful back. I moved his PC and XBox next to his bed because that's where he will be most of the time. He still cannot sit upright without extreme pain but we hope that goes away soon. We are taking it one day at a time but he is glad to be home and said his bed is way more comfortable. ♥🤗👣
