So, you’ve increased your protein intake… now what?

Be sure your putting time in increasing lean muscle mass. Why?

Lean muscle tissue is more metabolically active than fat, a body with more muscle mass will require more energy (calories) even at rest.

A 2003 study concluded that increases of 2.2 to 4.5 lbs. of muscle mass may result in an increase the basal metabolic rate by about 50 kilocalories per day.

This small change does help to close the “energy gap” between energy intake and energy expenditure.

Strength training helps to increase your basal metabolic rate (BMR) by increasing the amount of lean muscle on your body. Perform at least two 30-minute pure strength training workout weekly.

Be sure to switch up your workouts frequently and make changes to acute training variables: repetitions, sets, training intensity, training volume, repetition tempo, rest interval, exercise selection, exercise order, training duration, training frequency.

ICYDK, protein can help increase your metabolism. Protein requires more energy to digest, absorb, and dispose of then any other macronutrient.

For example, if you eat 100 calories of protein, 20-30% of those calories may be burned during digestion, leaving only 70 usable calories.

Because of this higher thermic effect and its ability to maintain lean muscle mass, a high protein diet can help increase your metabolic rate.

Our Crispy Tofu Lettuce Wraps will help you meet your protein goals, providing ___ kcals per serving. Not only are they easy to make, but tasty too!

Recently we’ve seen a surge of panic buying at the grocery store -stock piling everything including toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and bottled water. The spread of misinformation is causing many to react out of fear and anxiety instead of reacting from a solid knowledge base. Below are a few general guidelines based on empirical evidence to help you boost your immune system to give you a fighting chance!⁣

#1 Eat a Balanced Diet and Skip Megadosing Vitamins⁣
Vitamin C doesn’t ward off the common cold, and there is even less evidence that they grant immunity against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. ⁣

Support your immune system the healthy way by fueling your body with nutrient dense meals. Plant based meals are packed with phytonutrients which possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They may also enhance immunity and intercellular communication, repair DNA damage from exposure to toxins, detoxify carcinogens and alter estrogen metabolism. ⁣

#2 Get Adequate Sleep⁣
Current studies indicate that individuals who obtain inadequate sleep are more likely to get sick when exposed to viruses. In fact, the immune response to the influenza virus vaccine was diminished after six days of restricted sleep. Furthermore, there is also evidence for an enhanced susceptibility to the common cold with poor sleep efficiency. The CDC recommends getting seven or more hours of sleep per night.⁣

#3 Minimize Stress⁣
When we are stressed, the immune system’s ability to fight off infection is reduced. Stress limits your body's lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that help fight infection. The Cleveland Clinic states, “High stress levels also can cause depression and anxiety, leading to high levels of inflammation. In the long-term, sustained, high levels of inflammation point to an overworked, over-tired immune system that can’t properly protect you.” ⁣

Managing both physical and physiological stress will help decrease stress’ influence on your immune function. While this is most certainly a stressful time, find moments to decompress through meditation, yoga, journaling, or doing whatever activity brings you joy! @ Los Angeles, California

Most of you giving a go this year and are hopefully succeeding! Your plan tbased meals are packed with nutrients which may improve your health!⁣

Phytonutrients are natural chemicals produced by plants which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help support a healthy human body.⁣

Getting a variety of color onto your plate and boost the phytonutrient value of your meal by incorporating a variety of fruits and vegetables. Here’s a quick breakdown:⁣

🥕 Orange and Yellow - Beta carotene, a carotenoid, can be found in carrots, mango, sweet potatoes, and other similarly shaded foods. This phytonutrient is converted into vitamin A, which promotes good vision.⁣

🍅 Red - Lycopene, another carotenoid, can found in tomato, pink grapefruit, and watermelon has been linked to lowered risk for prostate, lung and stomach cancers.⁣

🍇 Purple and Blue - Anthocyanins, found in eggplants, radishes and berries, are antioxidants that may inhibit tumor growth, boost cognitive function, and fight heart disease.⁣

🥬 Green - Common carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin may prevent eye disease and stroke. These phytonutrients are found in foods including zucchini, leafy greens and basil.⁣

Blessed // I have been getting so many compliments on the website lately, I thought it would be nice to give credit to some of the people who helped make it a reality. Visually the site would be boring if it weren't for the talent of who is my photographer! If there is a picture of me on the site, you can be sure she took it. She is beyond amazing and its been such a blessing to have found someone who understands my vision. So big thanks to her! Rachel Kim, who designed and coded the site, deserves the biggest thank you! It took a year to develop the logo and the site and she stayed with me throughout the whole process. Definitely grateful for her!

Fat Tuesday // While I'm not a fan of calling anything 'fat', I do appreciate the significance of this day. Whether you know it as the day to celebrate Mardi Gras, or as Shrove Tuesday the day before Ash Wednesday, this day can be very impactful for your life. Tomorrow begins a fasting period of 40 days for Christians culminating with Easter. Most people think of this period as a time of giving something up... "I'm going to give up chocolate or alcohol or coffee". But it can be more than than... Outside of being a religious practice, it can be a time of reflection. You can use the next 40 days to grow deeper in your relationship with your self. Being mindful, practicing meditation, journaling your thoughts are all amazing ways to help you regain self control and settle into self acceptance, inspiration and appreciation. Sounds wonderful right! // Don't forget it's also the day where we eat lots of pancakes! So batter up, get flippin' and enjoy your Tuesday.

Gold Standard // def. "The best, most reliable, or most prestigious thing of its type." // Today I had the privilege of meeting up with and gleaning knowledge from some of the most amazing registered dietitians in Los Angeles. It was so great to be able to hear everyone's journey from where they began and then listen to them as they discussed their vision for their future in the industry. If there is a gold standard for what an R.D. should be, I definitely came across it today! Biggest thank you to & for hosting and organizing this event today. I'm so happy that 5 years ago I decided to take a short break from acting full time to pursue an education in dietetics. Seeing other bossed up, strong, women entrepreneurs was amazing and I'm so proud that in a years time I will be credentialed R.D.
