Another year of ReadersPlus meant that our program was able to reach 162 K-5 students for one-on-one tutoring across six of our schools. This year was filled with good company, smiles, and a love for learning. If you want to get involved next year, stay tuned for hiring announcements at the start of the fall semester. This is a reminder from former Readers Cecelia, Christine, and their little sister Charlotte to take a yoga break once in a while. The sisters gave us this powerful reminder 6 years ago during the pandemic, and they’re reminding us again today to take a breath and relax. Fight on and good luck with your finals Trojans!

We loved hearing what our students loved most about their neighborhood. This year we had over 130 entries from our partner schools and enjoyed reading each and every submission. Some were heart warming and others gave the judges a belly laugh that filled the room. It was difficult to decide on a winner for each grade when all of the entries brought such unique and wonderful perspectives. We’re already looking forward to next year’s writing contest, which will have a completely different prompt. Stay tuned!

Our network of Readers is so strong that we always seem to get a familiar face in the office. Our past and present central coordinator are pictured standing together next to the Readers library while the previous Mack coordinator store visited during our crafting for this year’s festival of books!

Ananya Shah was a coordinator with ReadersPlus until she graduated in 2023. Currently, she is attending Harvard Law School. One of her favorite stories with our program was working with one of her students on a creative writing project. During one of their last sessions together before the school year concluded, Ananya gave her student time to create her own story, anticipating only a few lines. She shared, “to both of our surprise, she ended up telling me a full saga about a princess saving the king and queen after her magical crown was stolen, featuring a very brave horse. I wrote it down for her and we filled up two whiteboards. It was so fun to hear how her imagination ran wild, and to watch how proud she felt of herself. Reading back that story with her is something I’ll always remember!”

That concludes the Festival of Books! This year, we asked our guests what they love most about their neighborhood. Almost 500 students visited the booth. Overwhelmingly, they often shared that they love the people in their neighborhood most.
With that said, let’s take a second to appreciate everyone in our neighborhood and community that made this weekend possible. We were able to give every child who came through our booth a new book thanks to Alice Monteverdi from DK North America for donating 540 copies of Voices in the Park by Anthony Browne. Our ReadersPlus team also pulled loved books from our shelves so each participant could go home with two books to start their own library collection.
Thank you also to Custom Ink for their gracious in kind donation of over $1,600 so that our Readers could wear this year’s shirt, thoughtfully designed front and back by our Literacy PA.
We also couldn’t have done it without all of our Readers and leadership. Many hands made light work, and your dedication over the last three weeks paid off.

LAUSD may be on Spring Break this week but our Readers are still working hard. Preparation for the festival of books is in full swing upstairs and the Readers Room has never been so full. Also honorable mention to our Foshay Coordinator for organizing the library. Keep up the good work everyone!

Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re too old to play with hand puppets. Students in Weemes’ Afterschool Book Club act out a scene from “How to Eat Fried Worms” by Thomas Rockwell while our Readers leadership uses the hand puppets to practice having difficult conversations

Feeling crafty? Readers, we invite you to join us in the Readers Room at 2pm on Fridays for “crafternoons” (get it, crafting + afternoons)! Last week our Literacy PA, , taught us how to make fun and easy book marks. Stop by at the end of the week to wind down and get creative. We’ll see you there!
