I don’t have any “spicy” snakes. This is why.
Personally, I dislike it when people call snakes “spicy”, as if it’s all on them. It’s not. As responsible caretakers, we must acknowledge and understand their uniqueness, their traumas, and their behaviors *along with our own*. They may not end up being a snuggle buddy, but we can reduce their stress, decrease the likelihood of defensive behaviors, and manage our own expectations if we think and act in the right ways.
Do all my snakes come when I call them or greet me eagerly? Nope. But these are things I’ve learned over the years that have and continue to encourage trust between us, and I truly believe it’s why I’ve rarely been bitten in decades of working with them. And thanks for the wise words, Abby Marie Stone - I’ll never forget them.

My entry for the Phailozoo Proper Care For Reptiles Campaign contest- 6’x2’x4’ bioactive Japanese Rat Snake enclosure. I like how this came out, but proper care doesn’t stop at setting up the enclosure- it’s a constant process of learning, improving, and adapting to your animal’s needs.
