PCOS got a new name today. Itās no longer Polycystic O***y Syndromeā¦. And instead, Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).
As someone who works with women who have PCOS, hereās what I think of the changeā¦
Who cares?
Instead of spending time, creating the perfect name for this condition⦠Why arenāt we instead educating doctors on how to support women with this condition?
It is crazy to me how often this is misdiagnosed.
And Iām talking misdiagnosed in both extremes.
Some women are suffering and never get a diagnosis.
Other women just have an irregular cycle and some fatigue and instantly get diagnosedā¦. when itās likely not a condition they have!
And when a woman is diagnosed⦠very often a doctor simply suggests they go on birth control.
This is helpful for some women.
But it is not the only way to support women with PCOS.
In fact, as a womanās health expert, I would suggest many other things before birth control.
šØ The renaming of PCOS just goes to show that people are still focusing on the wrong things.
Now is the name more fitting?
Probably.
Does it sound way too much like PMS?
Absolutely⦠and thatās gonna cause lots of confusion.
Does the name matter?
I really donāt think so.
ā”ļø Whatās my advice for women who have PCOS / PMOS?
Look at options outside of traditional healthcare if youāre struggling with symptoms and your doctor just wants to put you on birth control.
There are health coaches out there who spend a lot more time, on a daily basis, working with this condition that can support you.
Go out there and find the support that you need.
