Emotional flashbacks are the body’s way of remembering without your permission. You may not recall a specific event, but your nervous system registers something familiar. A look, a tone, a pause in conversation… and suddenly you're not reacting from the present, but from a place you didn’t even realize was still open.

This is often the voice of the inner child. Not a metaphorical concept, but the real, stored imprint of who you were when those emotions had nowhere to go. These flashbacks can feel confusing because they often carry shame, panic, or helplessness without a clear reason.

Instead of forcing yourself to “get over it,” try meeting it with curiosity. Ask: What age does this feel like? What was I needing back then that I didn’t get?

The goal isn’t to silence those parts. It’s to offer them the care they never received—and to remind them they’re not alone now.

Gratitude doesn’t have to be loud, performative, or written in a journal with perfect handwriting. It can be noticing the way your breath softens in the sun. The way your shoulders drop when someone really listens. The relief of clean sheets, or the stillness after noise.

Your body can recognize gratitude before your mind puts words to it. It slows the breath. Grounds your thoughts. Builds safety in the now.

If you’re not feeling it today, that’s okay. You’re not broken. And if you are, if even a flicker shows up, hold it close. 💛

When your nervous system is on high alert, your breath becomes shallow and quick, fueling anxiety and tension. But the opposite is also true: slow, intentional breathing sends a signal to your body that you're safe.

➡️ Try this technique:
1️⃣ Inhale slowly for 4 seconds.
2️⃣ Hold for 4 seconds.
3️⃣ Exhale for 8 seconds.
4️⃣ Repeat for 90 seconds.

This pattern activates the parasympathetic nervous system—your body’s natural “rest and restore” state. You may notice softer shoulders, a steadier heart rate, or a clearer mind. You don’t have to wait for the perfect moment to regulate. Start where you are. One breath at a time is still progress.

Save this for the next time your body needs a reminder: You're safe now. 🤍

This weekend I attended an event in Los Angeles called Come Home to You led by .sherrie and . Both help people heal from parental estrangement — something that’s shaped most of my adult life due to profound childhood abuse.

During Josh’s breathwork workshop, my body broke open. He had to physically pull me out because the pain was too much — decades of abuse, denial, and silence came rushing up all at once.

It’s hard to describe what that kind of pain feels like. It’s not just sadness. It’s anger, terror, grief, and disbelief all at once. It’s realizing you’ve been suffering your whole life while your family avoids you and caters to your abusers.

That kind of pain doesn’t just disappear. You learn to live with it, but you suffer tremendously, both physically and mentally. That pain has robbed me of being able to find safety and happiness throughout my life, regardless of how hard I try. Josh held space for me — literally — while I shook violently and cried in a way that terrified me. I told him if I let this out it will never stop. He didn’t flinch. He just held my hand and held my pain.

This workshop cracked open the door of releasing the pain, but I don’t know if I’ll ever fully release it all. However, in that moment, I felt safe in my pain. That is something I never experienced in my childhood. My pain was always perfectly hidden behind threats, while my outward appearance was always perfectly curated by lies. I am working on authenticity. It’s scary. I don’t really know how to be “me”, but I’m learning.

If you’ve been through abuse that everyone else denies, I see you. I feel you. I am you.
Healing hurts. But not healing hurts more. It’s a journey. Thank you, Dr. Sherrie and Josh for holding me, and everyone in our healing “family” during this moment of profound release and healing. I am eternally grateful to you both. ~MA

Life isn’t always polished—it’s messy, raw, and covered in scars. But peace isn’t found after the grit is gone. It’s found when you learn to see the beauty inside it. 🌆

If talk therapy hasn’t worked for you, you’re not alone. It’s not because you’re doing something wrong—it’s because trauma is stored in the nervous system, not just the mind.

Somatic healing focuses on the body’s role in recovery. That includes breathwork, grounding techniques, movement, and even safe touch. These practices help reset the nervous system, calm fight-or-flight responses, and teach your body what safety actually feels like.

You don’t need to explain your trauma to begin healing it. Sometimes, the most powerful shifts happen when you stop overthinking and start feeling. The body remembers, but it also knows how to release.

Want more ways to feel safe in your body? Follow along—this space is for you. 💛

If I had a dollar for every time I overexplained to those committed to misunderstanding me… I’d be a billionaire sitting next to Kendall Roy. 💸 But here’s the truth: no amount of words will change the minds of people who refuse to hear you. Protect your peace. 🖤✨

Some feelings are too tangled for words. You might sense a knot in your chest, a lump in your throat, but nothing clear to say. That doesn’t mean nothing’s happening—it just means the release might need a different door.

Try moving. Scribble something that doesn’t make sense. Let your hands or breath carry the weight that your voice can’t yet name. Not to fix anything. Not to explain it. Just to be with what’s real.

These moments aren’t small. They’re how you stay connected—when language goes quiet. Let it be messy. Let it be enough. 🫶
