Emotional flashbacks are the body’s way of remembering without your permission. You may not recall a specific event, but your nervous system registers something familiar. A look, a tone, a pause in conversation… and suddenly you're not reacting from the present, but from a place you didn’t even realize was still open.
This is often the voice of the inner child. Not a metaphorical concept, but the real, stored imprint of who you were when those emotions had nowhere to go. These flashbacks can feel confusing because they often carry shame, panic, or helplessness without a clear reason.
Instead of forcing yourself to “get over it,” try meeting it with curiosity. Ask: What age does this feel like? What was I needing back then that I didn’t get?
The goal isn’t to silence those parts. It’s to offer them the care they never received—and to remind them they’re not alone now.
