Although it IS found most often in people living with dementia, in only 25% of cases is it the ONLY pathology going on.

She left me when she forgot how to make Scramble.

Not when she died. Years before that.

My mother had dementia. And long before I lost her, I lost her in pieces, over and over, in ways nobody sends a sympathy card for.

There's a name for this: ambiguous loss. Grief with no clear ending, because the person is still here, but the relationship you had is already gone.

I wrote about what that grief actually looks like — the small losses that pile up before the final one, and why nobody tells you to prepare for them.

One of the truths I teach in dementia care is that we are the best tool we have when facing challenges in caring for someone living with dementia. Check your body language, tone and facial expressions when you are working with someone. It matters!!

Caregivers need a break and if that means sharing a video with your loved one while you take a shower or make a phone call, so be it!
