October 9 is Ageism Awareness Day. If you’re an older adult, you probably experience ageism on a daily basis — an overwhelming majority of people aged 50 to 80 say they encounter everyday ageism. This is a problem for our society as a whole. leads to discrimination in healthcare, the workplace, and beyond. It’s also linked to poorer health and higher rates of depression. The solution? Stop ignoring the problem and start talking about it. We ALL deserve to grow older with dignity and respect.

Nothing says fall like a truckload of farm-fresh produce! 🍁 Hundreds of pounds of fresh veggies and fruit arrived at Mystic Valley from Kimball Fruit Farm, thanks to a grant that makes this possible every year. 🍎🧅 Members of our team rolled up their sleeves for our annual "pack-up day," sorting and bagging everything for our Care Managers to deliver across the 11 communities we serve. Everyone deserves a chance to enjoy healthy, locally sourced food this season.

Looking back on our Summer BBQs! Here are some photo highlights from the BBQs, which we hold at community meal sites around the region. We partner with Councils on Aging, Housing Authorities, and our own MVAS Supportive Housing staff — and each site puts their own unique spin on the event. Thank you to our meal site volunteers and Nutrition Team, to our caterer City Fresh Foods, and to our community partners.

We are fortunate to have community partners like Northern Bank, which recently held a donation drive for the MVAS Emergency Closet. The Emergency Closet enables our team to provide essential items when they’re most needed — like towels, bedding, and toiletries. Thank you to Northern Bank and everyone who donated!

Want to help? Visit http://mysticvalleyaging.org/emergency-closet to shop from our Amazon Wish List or organize a donation drive.

Lots of learning and connecting at the Mass Aging Access Fall Conference this week! One of our Community Transitions programs was featured in a presentation led by Lisa Felci Jimenez, Director of Clinical Services at Mystic Valley, with partners from the Executive Office of Aging & Independence. This program helps older adults and people with disabilities to transition back to community living from nursing or rehab facilities. We’re grateful to Geoffrey, one of the people in this program, for sharing his story. After developing Guillain-Barré syndrome and a long rehab stay, Geoffrey is now thriving in his Malden apartment and gaining confidence and independence every day. Thank you to Mass Aging Access and all who made the conference possible!..
