I used to skip workouts because someone needed something. Sound familiar?

Here's what changed for me: I stopped seeing self-care as something I earned after I took care of everyone else. And I started seeing it as the thing that made me capable of taking care of everyone else.

When I move my body โ€” even 20 minutes โ€” I'm calmer. More patient. Less reactive at dinner. More present at the sideline.

When I eat real food and drink my water and do the things that fuel me, I'm a better mom, a better friend, a better version of myself.

๐Ÿ‘‰Putting yourself first doesn't mean your people come second. It means you're choosing to show up for them fully instead of running on empty.

โœจThat's not selfish. That's the whole point.

As a runner, this one was hard for me to accept.

For years I thought my runs were enough.

After all, my legs were working, I was sweating, and I was exercising for 30-60 minutes at a time.

But running is a cardiovascular workout, not a strength workout.

When I entered perimenopause, the strategy that had always worked stopped working. I was running the same way, eating what I thought was healthy, and still gaining body fat while not gaining muscle.

What I didn't realize was that my body needed a stronger stimulus.

Strength training helped me build and preserve muscle. Protein helped me recover. Strategic cardio supported my fitness without beating up my recovery.

The result? Better body composition, more energy, and stronger legs than I ever had from running alone.

Running can absolutely be part of a healthy fitness routine.

But if your goal is strength, muscle, metabolism, and body composition after 40, you need more than miles.

Are you a former runner who thought running counted as leg day? ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ
