The truth is high cholesterol usually doesn’t cause symptoms, unless it has already caused damage. Very rarely some people could have yellowish deposits around their eyes, tendons, or their skin. But one of the biggest myths about high cholesterol is that you feel it because most people don’t. In fact, high cholesterol is often called a silent risk factor because it can build up in your arteries for years without obvious symptoms. Knowing your numbers matters, especially if you have a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or other risk factors, including being southeast Asian. The goal is not to obsess over labs, but to understand your risk and make informed decisions about your health.
Have you had your cholesterol checked in the last year?

Another day in paradise. Trying to focus on my patients and mind my business on these internet streets. But it’s hard to do when I remember the patient who didn’t find her breast cancer on time because she was convinced by some online guru that mammograms caused breast cancer. And then after finding it, refused treatment because another online guru convinced her the oncologist was trying to get rich off her by recommending chemo and to take soursop juice instead. I know many have lost faith in the healthcare system as is, but veering completely off and listening to unqualified people or those trying to just sell you something isn’t the answer either. Before you click that link in bio or affiliate link, think what’s in it for this person? My heart bleeds seeing people being preyed on. So for today, I’ll just shut up and try to mind my business. Do me a favor and share this with any loved one who is leaning too heavily into healthfluencer misinformation. Beware of anyone who tells you to blatantly ignore science!

June is men’s health awareness month and studies show over and over again that men are more likely to avoid going to the doctor than Women. They are likely to avoid checking on their physical health, how much more mental health. Piggy backing off May which was mental health awareness month, I think this is an important conversation that needs to be had in our communities. Many issues, both mental and physical health concerns can avoid escalation only if we apply the principles of prevention. But how do we know unless we go? Save this video and share with any man in your life as you gently encourage them this month to prioritize their health. An ounce of prevention is always worth a pound of care.

Jesus be a fence. Who else is at that phase building a business where you can’t decline calls because you aren’t sure who is calling. Is it a prospective patient trying to make inquiries about the clinic? Or is it just another Spam bot or someone else trying to sell me their Google SEO services. Also who has tips for stepping out of your comfort cocoon to share the value your dpc brings with your community? Is there an app for that? Taking suggestions in the comments. Send help 😆😆😆😆😆

There are conversations that have been missing from our circles for far too long and menopause is one of them.
Black women are experiencing symptoms earlier, more severely, and are still being undertreated and overlooked. That’s not okay. So we talked about it. Openly. Honestly. In community at the .ofpurposeunited sip and savor event last weekend.
The information you deserve shouldn’t depend on who your doctor is or whether someone in your family felt comfortable enough to warn you.
If this is a conversation you’ve been needing, save this, share it with a woman in your life, and drop a comment below if you’re ready to stop suffering in silence.
We’re just getting started.

I never thought I’d be the doctor who shows up on social media and social media marketing was definitely not part of med school training. It did feel awkward showing up and totally out of my comfort zone but whenever a patient signs up and says ‘I came because you fell relatable and real’, or ‘I knew you were my doctor the moment I saw you’, then I am reminded that purpose is > comfort. And also that I can continue to do hard things. Medicine deserves to have the human put back in it. Now I see that connection starts long before the first appointment.
When you show up as you, the right patients do too. Patients who value relationship over rush. Turns out being real is the best kind of marketing!! So I’ll keep showing up, one awkward reel or post after another. Who else feels awkward showing up on social media? ☝️

These two symptoms should never be dismissed in a postmenopausal woman. Indeed they could be due to benign causes, but it is always worth an evaluation. Uncontrolled vaginal or vulvar itching can be a symptom of gynecological cancer, such as vulvar or vaginal cancer. While most persistent itching in postmenopause is caused by benign things like estrogen related vaginal changes or skin disorders, like lichen sclerosus, any new or worsening non-healing itch requires evaluation by a gynecologist. Other concerning signs to look for include white or red patches, thick or rough skin, sores, lumps, ulcers, or wart like growth that do not heal, unusual vaginal bleeding, or foul-smelling discharge, pelvic pain or tenderness. Post menopausal bleeding is pretty unusual, and even though it could be things like polyps causing it, it is also concerning for endometrial cancer. At the very least, schedule an exam with your primary care, doctor or gynecologist. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

I only ever wanted to take care of people.
But somewhere between prior authorizations, p*er to p*er calls, insurance overreach, rushed visits and endless paperwork, medicine stopped feeling like medicine. The worst part is Insurance formula is changing every now and again and all of a sudden medication that was previously covered is suddenly not covered anymore. Patience had left floundering and confused, not sure what direction the treatment should take. It should be absurd that insurance companies have this much influence or overreach where it comes to patient care. The worst is them sometimes insisting on period p*e calls when they’ve already made up their minds that the procedure or test or medication you are requesting approval for will not be approved. Taking out time from you already busy workday to spend on the phone all for nothing.
So I chose a different path that puts patients first. No more fighting with insurance to do what’s right for my patients.
I wish I could say that I was completely free of prior authorizations, even in the Dpc world, but for my patients who still have insurance I still do my best to go to bat for them. To my colleagues, holding down the fort in the traditional healthcare world, I say you are the real MVPs! What has been your experience with Insurance? Do share in the comments.
