After weeks of watching this mystery vine take off in the greenhouse, untangling it, redirecting it, and trying to figure out what in the world had decided to grow there… we finally have an answer. 😂😬
Bur cucumber.
(…I think…)
Never heard of it before. Never planted it. But it had no problem making itself right at home.
The little white flowers were the first clue. Then I noticed the yellow jacket hanging around them, which definitely caught my attention and made me keep a closer eye.
Especially because this thing grows FAST.
And in what felt like the blink of an eye, everything changed.
By Sunday morning, the yellow jackets seemed to have tripled almost overnight. There was even a wasp buzzing around, and flies had joined the party too.
The greenhouse itself felt like it had been invaded.
My husband had to come in and help me deal with it - which was a joy considering I was basically asking him to walk into a greenhouse full of yellow jackets knowing there was a pretty good chance one of us, if not both of us, was getting stung. 😬
And because I really didn’t want to start spraying anything in the greenhouse, especially around everything else growing in there, I had to make a call.
The flowers may have been feeding the pollinators, but the security detail had gotten out of hand.
So out it went.
After all that time spent untangling vines, redirecting growth, and trying to figure out what I had on my hands, the plant I never planted managed to teach me something.
You live and learn… 🌿😂🐝
