A heart on the move — literally beating inside a box!
This is a donor heart, kept in a viable, beating state inside a specialized box as it travels to transform a life. It is carried in the TransMedics Organ Care System, which marks a major advancement in organ preservation for transplantation.
Traditionally, donor hearts have been transported in a static, cold-storage environment, which can cause ischemic injury and compromise the organ’s viability. In contrast, this machine enables dynamic, ex vivo perfusion, where the heart is maintained at body temperature and continuously supplied with warm, oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood — closely mimicking normal physiological conditions.
This normothermic perfusion helps preserve the heart’s function by preventing cellular damage caused by lack of oxygen (ischemia) and minimizing the harmful effects of cold storage. By optimizing organ function during transport, the system extends the allowable time for transplantation, making it possible to match more donors with suitable recipients. It also provides real-time monitoring of key parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, ensuring the organ remains in optimal condition throughout the journey.
The use of the TransMedics system has been shown to improve outcomes in heart transplantation, reducing the risk of post-transplant complications and enhancing long-term graft function.
