Some time in the next few fall days, consider taking a short walk with no set destination in mind. Scout out a tree in fall color. Take a few moments to stand or sit near your chosen tree, perhaps lean against it. Breathe deeply. Look closely up at the canopy. Study the ground around the trunk of the tree.

Guide your attention to what you are feeling. What you are noticing. The colors and shades of color? The light on the leaves? The autumn wind? The shape of the branches and leaves against the sky? What are you noticing in these moments on pause?

The leaves will be changing color in plenty of time for an Autumn Colors Forest Therapy Walk on Tuesday, October 13, 1-3 pm at Clinton River Oaks Park. Besides being on the beautiful Clinton River, this Oakland County Park is neighbor to Yates C***r Mill and currently host to an Inside Out DIA painting with an interesting story titled The Talking Oak.

Wendell Berry, novelist, poet, essayist, and environmental activist, passed away on August 31st of this year at the age of 92. Each forest therapy walk is unique. Each is impacted by the land, the forest, meadows, streams. The season and phenology set the stage for our sensory experience. Weather, whether cool or warm, sunny or rainy, breezy or still, shapes our walk. Those who select to join each walk bring their own lived experience. Dusk to dark in Oak Park Woods. Ancient oaks and elderly beeches, leaves gently fluttering in the breeze, a maze of intertwined roots beneath our feet, sounds of a vibrant city park, the smell of soil, the texture of bark. The setting sun.
