❄️ Winter in Wisconsin is here, and so is the need for extra attention to car seat safety.
As temperatures drop, many families bundle their little ones in snowsuits and thick coats for warmth. While this is perfect for the cold outdoors, it becomes dangerous once your baby is placed in a car seat.
Proper car seat installation and correct harnessing can be life-saving.
According to national safety guidelines, a correctly installed and properly fitted car seat significantly reduces the risk of injury or death in infants. One of the biggest—and most common—winter mistakes is strapping a baby into the seat while they’re wearing a bulky coat or snowsuit. Although it may look warm and secure, the added bulk creates false tightness. In the event of an accident, the padding compresses, leaving dangerous slack in the harness.
✨ Here’s the safest winter method:
– Dress your baby in thin, snug layers (long sleeves, long pants, socks/booties).
– Secure them into the harness without a coat or snowsuit.
– Ensure the straps pass the “two-finger test”—snug, but not overly tight.
– Then add warmth on top: blankets tucked around them after they’re buckled in, or a safe car seat–approved cover that does not go under the straps.
This keeps baby warm and ensures the harness sits exactly as designed to protect them.
At Cradle & Care, keeping your little ones safe is always the priority—no matter the season. 🤎
Stay warm, stay safe, and let’s protect our babies the right way this winter.
