Oh, hey! ⏰ It’s been a minute. Yeah, fine…it’s been a lot of minutes. Quite honestly, a lot of REALLY TOUGH minutes, but I’m glad to be back.

So, let’s talk about the importance of taking a damn break. 🏖

Despite the hustle and bustle we’ve created that never seems to stop, the human body is not built to withstand the constant grind. Rather, we are wired for a series of short sprints, 🏃🏽‍♀️with breaks 🚫 (yes, real live BREAKS) in between.

A break is an INTENTIONAL disconnection from, or stoppage of, a stressor, whether it be work, a stressful emotional state, or physical exertion.

🍵 A break can be short (e.g.: “It’s been a minute..”)

or extended (e.g.: “It’s been a lot of minutes.”). 🛏

⏳Regardless of the duration, these periods of rest are essential to our health, happiness, and success.

And guess what—breaks are only as impactful as our intention, so rest purposefully.

During this time, the body focuses on restoration and healing to recover from stress, and, in turn, boosts future productivity and creativity.🧠

Breaks also foster a healthy response to stress and help us make better decisions in our lives. 🤔

Friends, please take a minute, or a lot of minutes, for a break.

Rest. 🪴

Rest like you mean it, so you can live like you mean it. Be good to you. 💖

Don't let your plate get caught without some green today! ☘️

🍋 Lemony Greens 🥬

Whenever I hear “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” I think of this salad…that’s not weird at all…right?

This salad is SO simple, and SO delicious. It pairs perfectly with pretty much everything, and offers lots of opportunities for variety by changing up the ingredients. Plus, it can be made in advance to make your busy week easier.

PROBIOTICS. ✨🦠✨These are the friendly bacteria and yeasts that live in the gut, and work hard 24/7 to aid in the digestion, production, and absorption of nutrients from food. 🌟 They are also critical to boosting the body’s immune system, protecting against invasion by dangerous microorganisms, and helping remove toxins from the system.

Fermented foods are excellent sources of probiotics and should be eaten on the daily, but supplemental probiotic support is almost always recommended. 💊

When it comes to probiotic supplements, there are a myriad of brands and formats available, all varying greatly in dose and quality.

Most commercial supplements are composed of TRANSIENT probiotics, which are the same probiotics found in fermented foods. These vegetative microorganisms travel through the digestive tract and are eliminated through defecation. Because these probiotics are indeed transient, they need to be continually replenished. 🔄

NATIVE probiotics, in contrast, are spore-forming microorganisms that make their home in the gut, where they create an ecosystem that fosters the healthy balance of all probiotic microorganisms, native and transient. 🏡

We recommend using probiotic supplements containing both native and transient probiotics, along with carefully-guided rotation between different strains, to cultivate plenty of diversity in the microbiome.

Happy Friday, Venn friends! Here are 4 easy peasy ways to show your incredible, hard-working gut some love. 😘

STAY HYDRATED 🌊
The digestive system requires A LOT of water (>1 gallon/day, in fact, absorbed from different areas of the body) to break down food and absorb its goodness. Most of this water must be consumed by us in order to keep everything running as it should.

Here is a simple way to calculate how many ounces of water (MINIMUM!!!) you should be consuming each day.

Minimum Daily H2O intake (oz.) = Body Weight (lbs) / 2

🗯Did I mention this is the MINIMUM daily water intake?!?! We'll take a deeper dive on this (and all of these tips) later...pinky swear! 🤙

EAT DIVERSE FIBERS
🍓🥕🍋🥦🫐🍇
The gut contains as many as 400 TRILLION MICROBES critical to nutrient absorption, hormone regulation, immunity, and SO👏MUCH👏🏾MORE. Each unique type of bacteria in the gut (there are hundreds) requires unique fuel to do its thing. FIBER = FUEL. Focus on VARIETY when choosing your fiber-filled plant foods!

ADD FERMENTED FOODS🧪
Eating NATURALLY fermented foods is an excellent way to boost your populations of probiotic (beneficial) gut bacteria. The fermentation process also helps make other beneficial nutrients in these foods easier to absorb. Win, win! Here are just a few delicious, naturally fermented foods to look for in the REFRIGERATED section of your local market: sauerkraut, kimchi, other naturally pickled fruits and veg., kefir, yogurt, kombucha, & kvass.

QUANTITATIVE TESTING 📈
The path to healing looks different for each and every person. Because of the awe-inspiring uniqueness that makes each human body so incredible, there is NO ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL approach. Symptoms are only one piece of the puzzle. Quantitative testing can help reveal the root cause of symptoms--stealth infections, imbalances, and food triggers that can compromise the body's amazing ability to heal itself. Revealing and removing these hurdles is the first step in restoration to support healing.

We talk a lot about digestion around these parts, especially about ways to foster and improve it. But what's the big whoop? Why does this matter...really? Does it matter?

Short answer is a resounding YES (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Digestion is the gateway to all aspects of health. Yes, ALL of them. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is connected to
every major system in the human body, which means that when the GI system can’t properly digest & absorb nutrients, the vitality of the entire body may be compromised.

The GI tract is responsible for digestive function, the north-to-south process our bodies depend on for nourishment. But the party doesn't stop there...

The GI tract is also home to the enteric nervous system (ENS) also known as the body's "second brain". Like the brain, the ENS uses over 30 neurotransmitters. In fact, the gut produces ~90% and ~50% of the body's serotonin & dopamine, respectively. The health of the gut has a profound effect on mood and mental health.

The gut is also a main player in the body's immune system, and when it is struggling, immunity is greatly reduced. Over 60% of the immune system is in the gut. The GI tract's lymphoid tissue works to protect the body from invasion, and stores immune cells, such as T and B lymphocytes, that carry out attacks and defend against pathogens.

Without the integrity of the digestive system, the body cannot support the other foundations of health. It is said that the gut is the “mother” of the body because of how it
feeds everything from our brain to our skin, in the same way a mother feeds a child.

DIGESTION...your health BEGINS here.

Discover what lights you up and go do it. 💖

Nutrition and movement aren’t the only lifestyle factors influencing our health.

Allowing yourself to do the things you love doing helps manage stress and positively impacts emotional and physical wellbeing. Create a list of things you truly enjoy—whether it’s going for a hike 🥾, reading a novel 📚, playing piano 🎹, taking a pottery class 🏺, tending a garden 🌱, anything!

Make your list as long as you’d like and consider this your self-care menu. Block time for an activity on your list each week, making it a wellness priority equal to your food choices and movement.

Make it happen! 🦄
