Swen Nater is a former professional basketball player known for his impressive career in both the American
Basketball Association (ABA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). Born on January 14, 1950, in Den Helder, Netherlands, Nater moved to the United States at a young age and faced numerous challenges, including learning a new language and adapting to a new culture. Nater played college basketball at UCLA, where he was part of two NCAA championship teams in 1972 and 1973. Despite being a backup to the legendary Bill Walton, Nater's talent was undeniable1. He was drafted in the first round of the 1973 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks but chose to start his professional career in the ABA with the Virginia Squires. Throughout his career, Nater played for several teams, including the San Antonio Spurs, New York Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, Buffalo Braves/San Diego Clippers, and Los Angeles Lakers1. He is the only player to have led both the ABA and NBA in rebounding, showcasing his dominance on the boards1. Nater was a two-time ABA All-Star and was named the ABA Rookie of the Year in 1974. After retiring from professional basketball, Nater became a successful author and motivational speaker, sharing his experiences and insights from his remarkable journey.
