As an oncologist, I get the question all the time: what's the difference between a biopsy and a diagnosis? 🤔

A biopsy takes a sample. Pathology studies that sample. Then we use that information, along with scans and labs, to understand what is actually going on and make a diagnosis.

Thyroid cancer does not always start with something dramatic. Before a diagnosis, it can look like:

1️⃣ A lump or swelling in the neck
2️⃣ Hoarseness that does not go away
3️⃣ Trouble swallowing
4️⃣ A constant feeling of pressure in the throat

These signs do not always mean cancer, but they do deserve attention, especially if they are new or persistent.

Your body often gives quiet signals before something bigger gets your attention. Three signs I do not want ignored are:

1️⃣ Feeling full quickly
2️⃣ Frequent infections
3️⃣ A sore that does not heal

These signs do not always mean cancer, but when they are new, persistent, or unexplained, they deserve a closer look.

Tumor markers are lab numbers that can help us track some cancers. Scans show us what is happening in the body. One is not a replacement for the other - we use both in context.
