🌙 Functional Medicine Friday 🌙
Think sleep is just "turning your brain off?" Think again... 😴
While you're asleep, your brain literally takes out the trash. The glymphatic system becomes up to 10 times more active during deep sleep, helping clear metabolic waste and proteins that accumulate throughout the day. That's one reason consistently poor sleep has been linked to long-term brain health.
Just one night of sleeping only 4–5 hours can temporarily reduce insulin sensitivity, making your body respond less effectively to glucose the very next day.
Adults ages 40–65 are among the most sleep-deprived groups. Hormonal changes, increased stress, caregiving responsibilities, and chronic health conditions all contribute to declining sleep quality.
✨ Want to improve your sleep naturally?
Get 10–20 minutes of morning sunlight within the first hour of waking.
Move your body every day, but avoid intense exercise right before bed.
Turn off screens or wear blue-light blockers 1–2 hours before bedtime.
Limit caffeine after lunch and avoid alcohol close to bedtime, it may make you sleepy, but it disrupts restorative sleep.
🥝 Eat more:
• Magnesium-rich foods (pumpkin seeds, spinach, almonds)
• Tart cherries or unsweetened tart cherry juice (natural source of melatonin precursors)
• Kiwi (some studies suggest it may improve sleep onset and duration)
🚫 Limit:
• Late-night sugar and heavy meals
• Excess caffeine
• Alcohol before bed
• Bright screens late at night
🌿 Helpful supplements & herbs (talk with your healthcare provider before starting anything new):
• Magnesium glycinate or malate. Either capsule or topical!
• L-theanine
• Glycine
• Apigenin (found naturally in chamomile)
• Lemon balm
• Passionflower
✨ Remember: You can't out-supplement poor sleep. Quality sleep is when your body repairs tissues, balances hormones, strengthens your immune system, consolidates memories, and recharges your metabolism.
Because sometimes the most productive thing you can do... is go to bed. 😴💙
