Traveling soon? Long car rides can take a toll on your body, especially your neck, back, and hips. As physical therapists, we see a lot of stiffness and soreness that could be prevented with a few simple habits! Here are 4 tips to stay more comfortable on the road:
1️⃣ Support Your Posture
Adjust your seat so your knees are level with your hips and your shoulders can relax against the seat. A small towel roll or lumbar support behind your low back can make a huge difference!
2️⃣ Take Movement Breaks
Try to stop every 1–2 hours to stand, stretch, and walk for a few minutes. Even quick movement helps improve circulation and reduces stiffness.
3️⃣ Stretch Before & After Travel
Gentle stretches for your neck, hips, hamstrings, and calves can help your body tolerate long periods of sitting much better.
4️⃣ Don’t Grip the Wheel Too Tight
Tension in your hands, shoulders, and upper back builds up quickly during long drives. Keep your shoulders relaxed and switch hand positions often.
A little preparation can go a long way toward preventing aches and pains during travel!
