"I often receive inquiries about how to determine if a dog enjoys being a therapy dog. My usual response highlights the positive signals exhibited by the dog: Is there a noticeable 'pep in his paws' as he enters the familiar environment? Does he seek out interactions with unfamiliar individuals? Is his posture relaxed, and does his tail sway gently as if moved by a soft breeze?

These are the signs I love to observe while walking with a team through the hospital. However, what truly makes my heart soar is witnessing a therapy dog mirror the excitement of the human he has chosen to share his joyful tail wags with.

The connection between Rocket and this care team member is undeniable. Rocket's unique personality, combined with the human's body language, energy, and scent, created a safe and immediate bond. Their conversation lasted several minutes and felt truly magical."

MUSC Animal Therapy Program Coordinator Cathy Bennett believes dogs form initial impressions when meeting us. What do you think? Have you benefited from crossing paths with a therapy dog at MUSC Health?
