💕 Self-love can be a difficult concept for many people. We're often taught to care for others first, leaving little room to show ourselves the same kindness and compassion.

Self-love isn't about being perfect or putting yourself first all the time. It's about recognizing that your needs, feelings, and well-being matter, too.

If any of the ideas in this post feel challenging, consider choosing just one small step to practice this week. Meaningful change often begins with simple acts of self-compassion. 💙

🌈 Pride Month invites us to reflect on the courage it takes to live authentically.

As mental health professionals, we often witness the impact that hiding parts of oneself can have on emotional well-being. As well as the healing that can occur when people are given space to show up as their full selves.

Two quotes that resonate with us this month:

✨ "Mental wellness takes place where shame ends and self-acceptance begins"

✨ "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Pride is more than a celebration. It is a reminder that authenticity, visibility, and community matter. It honors those who paved the way, those who continue advocating for equality, and those who are still finding the courage to embrace who they are.

Blue Lotus is happy to celebrate the beauty of human diversity and the strength that comes from living openly, authentically, and unapologetically. 🪷

🌈 June is Pride Month! A time to celebrate the strength, resilience, and diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community while also recognizing the unique challenges many individuals continue to face.

Research consistently shows that LGBTQIA+ individuals experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, and suicidal ideation compared to their heterosexual and cisgender peers. These disparities are not caused by identity itself, but are often linked to experiences of discrimination, rejection, bullying, stigma, barriers to healthcare, and much more.

Mental health support can be a powerful tool in fostering healing, self-acceptance, connection, and resilience. Every person deserves access to affirming care where they feel seen, respected, and valued for exactly who they are.

This Pride Month, we encourage conversations that reduce stigma, increase understanding, and promote mental wellness for all. Our practice is committed to providing an affirming, inclusive, and compassionate space for every identity, every background, and every journey. You are welcome here.

Blue Lotus Essential Reads: May Edition 📚

If you’re looking for a powerful, honest, and deeply validating read on trauma and healing, What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo is a book we often recommend.

This memoir explores the lived experience of Complex PTSD and what it can feel like to move through the world with a nervous system shaped by early trauma. It also weaves in research, reflection, and the author’s personal journey of trying to understand patterns of fear, survival responses, and emotional overwhelm.

What makes this book especially impactful is its honesty about healing. It doesn’t present recovery as quick or linear. Instead, it highlights how healing can involve learning your internal patterns, building safe relationships, and slowly developing a different kind of connection to yourself over time.

This is a meaningful read for anyone wanting to better understand trauma, emotional responses, or the process of rebuilding safety within the self.

Who Is Series: May Edition 🌷

Carl Rogers was a pioneering psychologist whose work helped redefine how mental health professionals understand change, healing, and human connection. Rather than viewing people as problems to be fixed, Rogers emphasized the importance of understanding individuals within their lived experience and inner emotional world.

He developed a therapeutic approach grounded in presence and relationship, where the therapist’s role is to offer genuineness, deep understanding, and consistent acceptance. This approach challenged more directive models of therapy at the time and shifted attention toward what clients experience internally as the driver of growth.

His legacy continues to shape modern counseling approaches that prioritize collaboration, emotional safety, and the belief that people have the capacity to move toward healthier functioning when conditions support it.

If someone you care about is experiencing suicidal thoughts, your response can make a meaningful difference.

According to guidance from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), here are supportive steps you can take:

• Ask directly and calmly if they are thinking about su***de (this does not increase risk!)
• Listen without judgment and take their feelings seriously
• Stay with them or ensure they are not alone if they are in immediate distress
• Help them connect to professional support (therapist, doctor, or crisis services)
• In an emergency or if there is immediate risk, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room
• In the U.S., you can call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline for guidance and support

If you’re unsure what to say, start simple: “I’m here with you” and “You don’t have to go through this alone.”

And if you’re struggling yourself while supporting someone else, reach out too. You don’t have to carry this alone either. Support is available for you as well.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder that early support, presence, and connection can save lives.

A mental health check-in is more than “How are you doing?” It’s also asking, “What’s happening inside you right now?”

Take a moment today to notice your emotional world. What feelings are present? What thoughts have been showing up? What does your body feel like it needs right now?

You don’t have to fix anything to begin noticing it. Awareness is often the first step toward understanding and care.

Checking in with yourself can be simple, quiet, and honest. Even a brief pause to name what’s going on internally can help you stay connected to yourself in a meaningful way.

How are you really doing today?

Distress tolerance skills are designed for high stress moments when it feels difficult to slow down, think clearly, or respond effectively. You know, those moments when we just want to react?

Why are these skills important to know? Because during moments of high stress, the brain and nervous system are often focused on immediate relief rather than long-term outcomes. Having coping tools already practiced and familiar can make it easier to respond in ways that are safer, more effective, and more aligned with our goals. 🧠

The more these skills are practiced, the easier it becomes to respond intentionally instead of reacting automatically. So, if somatics aren't your thing, here's some others way to move through hard, heavy hitters 😉.

Emotions are not problems to eliminate, they are actually just the messengers of our experiences. Yall ever heard the phrase, "you gotta feel it to heal it"?

Many of us were taught to ignore, suppress, judge, or “push through” difficult emotions. We're learning now that it can create even more disconnection from ourselves and our internal needs.

So, sometimes the “antidote” is not forcing feelings away, but learning how to respond to ourselves with greater awareness, compassion, curiosity, and care. Here are some ways to feel it, to. heal it, from us to you 💙.

Blue Lotus always is going on about "oh we specialize in trauma therapy, mind body connection, somatics, blah blah". But what does that actually mean?? Trauma therapy is not only about talking through painful experiences. It is also simultaneously about rebuilding connection within ourselves.

Why? Many people who have experienced chronic and/or complex trauma learn to disconnect from their emotions, body sensations, needs, or internal world as a way to survive overwhelming experiences. That disconnection is protective and crucial when it's needed, but over time it can leave people feeling numb, detached, chronically anxious, emotionally reactive, or unsure of what they are actually feeling, even when the chaos has long surpassed us.

Trauma-informed and somatic approaches help strengthen the mind-body connection by increasing awareness of internal experiences in safe, manageable ways. This can look like learning to notice physical sensations, emotional shifts, nervous system responses, or signals of stress before becoming overwhelmed by them.

As access to our internal world increases, so does our ability to regulate emotions, identify needs, establish safety, and respond to ourselves with greater compassion and understanding.

Healing often begins with the reconnection to the parts of ourselves we once had to disconnect from in order to survive. 🌿
