How do you know if your nervous system is spending more time in a protective state?
It doesn't always look like panic attacks or overwhelming anxiety.
Sometimes it looks like...
✨ Feeling tired but finding it difficult to truly relax. ✨ Always thinking about the next thing on your to-do list. ✨ Tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, or tension that seems to linger. ✨ Feeling easily overwhelmed or on edge. ✨ Waking up exhausted, even after a full night's sleep. ✨ A mind that won't seem to quiet down at bedtime.
If several of these sound familiar, your nervous system may simply be working very hard to protect you.
Our bodies are beautifully designed with a built-in stress response called the sympathetic nervous system. Its job is to keep us safe by releasing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline so we can respond to challenges.
The challenge is that our nervous system doesn't always distinguish between a true physical threat and the ongoing demands of everyday life...work deadlines, caregiving, family responsibilities, financial concerns, or a calendar that's always full.
Over time, it may spend more time in a protective state and fewer opportunities in a state of rest and restoration.
The good news is that our nervous system is adaptable. Through repeated experiences of safety and support, it can become more flexible and better able to shift between responding to stress and returning to a place of rest.
Practices like mindful breathing, gentle movement, spending time in nature, restorative sleep, meaningful connection, and vibrational sound therapy can all support your body's natural rest and restore response.
Your body isn't working against you. It's working to protect you.
Sometimes healing doesn't begin by pushing harder.
Sometimes it begins by creating enough safety for your body to remember how to rest.
Many of the people who come to my sound therapy sessions tell me they didn't realize how much stress they had been carrying until they experienced a moment of deep rest.
My hope is that everyone has opportunities to support their nervous system in ways that feel safe and restorative.
If you're curious about how vibrational sound therapy may support your own journey, I'd be honored to welcome you. 😊
